PC == MS Windows (average price)
+ Large software library
+ High hardware & drivers compatibility
- High virus & malware vulnerability
+/- Low learning curve for people with basic Windows experience.
- It is difficult to learn another OS such as Linux/Mac, once comfortable with using Windows,

PC == Linux (most inexpensive PC one can get)
- Smaller software library than MS Windows
- Hardware & drivers compatibility isn't as high as Windows.
+ Extremely low vulnerability to virus/malware.
+/- Average learning curve for people with no previous computer exposure.
+ Easy to learn other OSes such as Windows/Mac after having some experience with Linux.
+ OS (Operating System) are free, some can also so be had for a very low fee.
+ Most software are free.

Mac (expensive doesn't equate to quality)
- Smaller software library than MS Windows & possibly Linux.
- Hardware & drivers compatibility is lower than Windows & Linux
+ Low vulnerability to virus/malware.
+/- Average learning curve for people with no previous computer exposure.
+ Relatively easy to learn other OSes such as Windows/Linux after having some experience with Mac (pending user).

IMHO, get a PC & install Linux on it so that your children will use it as a tool instead of becoming a drone that play games and download music (it is harder to become a drone in Linux, and Linux have the ability to play games & dl music).

PC still is cheaper than Mac notebook. And, it depends on the what it is use for. For the average user, a cheap Netbook will be more than adequate that one can't quantify the need for an extremely over price Macbook. Desktop is more of a logical choice for heavy user that pushes the limit of a netbook, and bypass notebook all together.

I can buy a new PC netbook every year for a decade for the price of one average Macbook.

Well its 1k and macs have more battery life, even the 1k regular whitebook one has more battery life now than conventional laptops.

$1k is expensive for a laptop. Can get two decently spec'd PC laptops for that price. And just get an upgraded battery and they last for hours. And if you haven't used Win7, it's more optimized to get longer batteyr life as is.

Actually I do have windows 7 and xp and vista on my laptop and they all have the same battery life. It is not optimized at all.

PC if you want the kids to be able to use what they'll find 95% of the time in the real world......

Mac, if you feel the need to be smug about your purchase!

I'm 100% sure they'll have an old pc lying around somewhere. The kids won't be windows starved at all.

With the significant # of Apple products used in primary education, I think the opposite argument could be made...

I'm a PC guy, but honestly I think the refurb section of the Apple Store is pretty decent, http://store.apple.com go to the refurbished link on the left hand side, score a mint condition Macbook with a full warranty for $750.

jebus

to get that kind of battery life and portability in a pc would require an SU processor (which is crap) and shelling out just as much money

although the newer unibody macbook is $799 AR (+taxes on $999) at microcenter

edit: dell inspiron 13 with fairly similar specs is $799 w/o rebate. i'd rather have the mac. 9400M > intel integrated crud

Get whatever makes you happy and productive for your purposes. If low on cash get a PC. If you can splurge get a Mac.

Cost of Windows PC is normally less than Mac, but more than Linux PC (Linux software & OS generally are free). The high cost of a Mac doesn't necessarily mean that user experience is that much better than a PC be it Windows or Linux.

Majority of Windows users don't have the patience at learning another OS, while majority of the Linux user are more adaptable that willing to learn another OS. Mac user is somewhat in between of Windows & Linux user in learning new OSes mentality.

I have had experience with Apple OSes since the early 80s, Amiga OS in the 90s, Unixes since the early 90s, MS OSes since the late 80s, and Linuxes since the Late 80s. And, IMHO the learning curve are relatively similare to each others.

Noting that somebody is going to chip in 50% seems to imply that the cost can be somewhat of a concern. When it comes to price vs. value, then definetly go PC. Apple obviously does fantastic industrial design, but you do pay for that. Furthermore with children playing on the computer the cost of a replacing a PC notebooks is significantly cheaper than repairing or replacing a Mac. Also dollar-for-dollar you can generally get a "better" computer system going for a PC as opposed to a Mac.

Also if, or rather when, they may want to play games it would be simpler to do so on a PC as opposed to a Mac. I am sure people will mention you can install Windows as a virtual machine on a Mac, but that is probably a bit overboard for 3 - 5 year olds to deal with.

I would not be too terribly concerned about kids using a PC to become more familiar with the dominant OS. When I was a kid growing up, and I am sure there are tons of people like me, Apple was the dominate computer in schools. I was first exposed to computers on Mac II and Mac Plus. Over the past 20 (?) years I have been a PC guy even though my first exposure was on a Mac and it did not negatively impact any of my computer abilities. Also kids will adapt to whatever.

Again, with that being said, I will still go with a PC based on price vs. value.
