Just ordered w. my student discount. Only $69 .. I love how Apple takes care of students.

Ever tried buying windows xp pro under a student license? MS makes much, MUCH larger contributions in the way of discounts and give-aways to students and educational institutions than Apple can possibly hope to.

It enhances their market share, though, producing thousands of students who are familiar with only MS products...devious.

Edit: M$ also has about six times the market cap of Apple at the moment.

The only reason that the MAC OS excels over the MS OS is because the OS only supports a very limited line of hardware. This allows software designers to cut loads of bloat out of their software and further "purify" their software to function better because they know exactly what to expect. MS's OSes are far, far superior.

At the end of the day, both will type up those TPS reports just fine

You're right. And personally I'd "sacrifice" the option to buy cheap no-name hardware and thus being "locked" into having to use high-quality hardware that runs on software that runs more efficiently and with better stability. And Apple has a wide range of hardware choices and is priced very well when you consider EVERYTHING you get ( don't forget that just the cooling system and the case from the Powermac G5 is a marvel and buying that separately would cost you a lot of $$ )

I bet the kids over at M$ just smack themselves silly when they see innovative features like these. Duh, why didn't we think of that?

M$ Introduces new features with windows, it's called 'abuse of the monopoly' and get their arse sued for it.

Apple Introduces new features with OSX, it's called 'innovation'.

Hell even MS Paint could have been replaced by now, but it's not worth the lawsuits.

I read the flashy whizbang graphic siht was scalable so a Mini could still run Tiger but not have the full pimp effect. Kinda like HL2 with DirectX 7/8.

See, MS products are much easier to recover from if you fvck something up. That is, if you don't know how to stablize the system to begin with, but that's just a pissing match conversation.

the link just says

Requirements

* Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G3, G4 or G5 processor
* Built-in FireWire
* 256MB of RAM
* 3GB of available hard disk space (4GB if you install the developer tools)
Make sure your hardware can run Mac OS X Version 10.4 Tiger

Mac OS X Version 10.4 requires a Macintosh with:

* PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
* Built-in FireWire
* At least 256MB of physical RAM
* A built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
* At least 2.0 GB of available space on your hard drive; 3.5GB of disk space if you install XCode 2 developer tools

Note: Mac OS X does not support processor upgrade cards. The amount of disk space required depends on your computer and the way you are installing Mac OS X.

it doesn't say anything about video

the more detailed requirements page lists a mac mini

The Radeon 9200 is not a Shader 2.0 compliant card, so it won't get the GPU acceleration to Quartz 2D Extreme or Core Image.

However, the OS will run just fine on the Mac mini.

quartz xtreme says a 16MB card it'll probably work.....this is a nice marketing scheme...sell the minis..and then call them in for an upgrade. Very smart.

Quartz Extreme showed up in 10.2 Jaguar. The Mac mini supports this.

Quartz 2D Extreme showed up in 10.4 Tiger. The Mac mini does not support this.

However, like I said, the Mac mini will work fine with Tiger. Tiger on the mini will be as fast as with Panther, if not faster.

OTOH, Tiger will run faster than Panther on machines with shader 2 compliant GPUs.

ie: Re: Speeds:

iBook 10.4 >= 10.3
Mac mini 10.4 >= 10.3
Current iMac 10.4 > 10.3
Current PowerBook 10.4 > 10.3
Power Mac with X800 10.4 >> 10.3

Mac OS X is *nix. So no, it's no better than Nix.

Mac is doing the same thing it did in the 80s. Creating technology that is ahead of it's time, and not selling.

So buy a two-button optical mouse for $10. I use a 1-button mouse myself though.

Apple's student developer program = $100. MSDN Subscription if your college doesn't provide one (mine doesn't) =~$1000.

Shame they havent ported this to pc's (although it would make winXP look stable when mac couldnt control their hardware anymore).

Id like to run it but im not buying overpriced mac hardware to do so.

When MS does it, it's part of an evil plan. When Apple does it, it's charity? Now THAT'S devious.

I don't understand why they "require" Firewire though.
