Hello,

My name is Tom and I'm new here. What does everyone think of the MAC OS X operating system? I'm not pleased with it at all.

It's got some minor annoyances but overall it's tons better than Windows. But, I still like Debian GNU/Linux better =).

Mainly interface habits I've picked up over the years that don't work the same. I can't think of any specifics right now, well he single menu bar is annoying. =)

Also, ifconfig has no promisc option and SMB support is terrible, copying a file via finder goes like 1/3 the speed of smbclient.

slowness is the only thing if you dont have a fast enough machine. if you have any of the G4s, you should be fine. ive heard some complaints with the G3 iBooks but not everyone. i think its a beautiful OS and its well organized too.

n0c is right. Go to your nearest Apple Store and check it out yourself. Try iTunes, iPhoto, Sherlock and if possible Microsoft Office V. X.

It's a shame for Microsoft that their office suite runs and looks better than in their own OS.

No kiddin'...Since it is UNIX based, I wonder how long 'till someone ports or re-compiles it to run on linux.

n0cmonkey,

Did you install 10.1.5 update? If you did, could you show me Quartz anti-aliasing screenshot?

It will be more difficult than that, unfortunately. Office X, being an Aqua program, makes a huge number of function calls to Aqua, much like KDE programs spend most of their time calling QT and GNOME programs call GTK+ libraries. Perhaps if Apple releases Aqua as open source, but that is highly improbable.
I have long disliked Macs, dismissing them as kiddie machines with a kiddie OS, but I have to admit MacOS is a truely great product. I have to wonder if it is better than BeOS would be, had it been made the standard though.
Now if only Macs hardware were as open as PC hardware, I would not hesitate to get a Mac for my next machine...

Macintosh uses a lot of hardware that conforms to open standards.

Someone could try and do a non-Aple Aqua library, like Wine, it would probably be easier than Wine too.

Yea those damn PCI cards, SDRAM modules and IDE hard drives are so hard to find...

Maybe he's talking about those PC only items like Ethernet and USB ports and firewire buses?

Oh yeah...and Airport is a proprietary format, completely incompatable with 802.11b networks and has no Windows based administration tool.

Well, while it works Apple's idea of a WEP key is different than eveyrone elses and it's a pain to get a non-Apple client working with encryption.

You never know

"Some analysts have also urged Apple to move to microchips from Intel Corp. INTC.O from those made by Motorola Inc. MOT.N and International Business Machines Corp. IBM.N to cut costs.

Asked about that possibility, Jobs said that first the company had to finish the transition to the OS X operating system, expected around the end of this year.

"Then we'll have options, and we like to have options," he said."

i'm just lovin' it.

and yeah... if mac's price falls to be very competitive to pc's...
i don't see why more people would use it.

the way i see it... even though this is a market that won't generate much $, you really gotta hit the college/grad folks as the main marketing target.

that might mean that you provide them with this attractive OS...
and it could also mean that you lower the cost of the pc.

get them to love it... get them to use it!

once that happens... it's just a matter of time... before mac starts to rise above this plateu that it seems to be stuck on.

either make the os portable to x86 machines...
or make things cheaper... without sacrificing quality.

Agree. But I'm annoyed about how the toolbar of programs with multiple windows interface are handled. For example, Eudora 5 for Mac OS X, Microsoft Office v.X, etc. I don't like the way they separate the toolbar with the main window, I don't have problem with the placement of the menu bar. I think Mac OS X application should be more like Sherlock, iTunes, Mail, etc. Toolbar should be integrated with main program window. It looks better.

Im not getting into another debate as to why apple should not move to x86 processors. Its pointless, x86 zealots dont listen to any of the arguements, and they only say the same thing: "they're cheaper and faster."

1. They have more mhz and are optimized for certain tasks better than PPC chips. PPC has their strenghts and soon to be released (next year or two) should prove to be very nice. mhz be damned.
2. x86's architecture needs to die. Its hack upon hack upon hack. Im tired of backwards compatibility slowing everything down.
3. The x86 based Apple machines would not be any cheaper.

Charles, I like the way apple does it. Its less clutter in my programs.

Oh yeah? What do you think about Finder then? You think Finder should has a separate toolbar?
