MAC OS9 networked to NT4 Server

i duno much about MACs, but my friend (a MAC user) needs to access files on an NT4 Server...

i know OS X has filesharing capabilities with Windows machines...but does OS9?...

what would be needed for OS9 to access a shared folder on NT4?
Appletalk?

I can't remember if it's called the same thing as in win2k, but you have to load apple file and print sharing. It basically adds appletalk and let's you create shares accessible by macs.

It's probably easiest to just install Dave on the Mac client machine and access the existing shares on the NT box unless you plan to have more Mac OS9 clients connected to it. You can also as bs said, install filesharing for Macintosh service for NT.

Agreed on both counts. You'd have to pay for Dave, but it would be the easiest to install and use. If you go the NT route, you'll have to create new shares (I believe, as it's been a long while since I've done this) and make them accessible to both Windows and Macs.

Your friend has all that is needed to access files on a NT4 server. No need to buy DAVE, although it is a nice package and its way faster than Appletalk on NT4. (By comparison, the Appletalk over IP stack included in W2K is 4 time fasters than the native Appletalk stack included in NT4,IIRC)

On his NT4 server, he has to install Services for Macintosh (see to server doc on how to do it).
Next, head over to the the control panels and use the Windows For Workgroup-style File Manager to set up an Macintosh share. Depending on the number of files shared, it may take a while until the share appear on the network.

On his Mac, your friend has to bind AppleTalk to his Ethernet adapter and he should be able to see the the NT4 server in the Chooser.

One caveat: the partition to be shared has to NTFS (so that NT can saves the Mac resource fork in an NTFS stream).

Once you install file and print sharing for macintosh, you should be able to just enable a Mac share on the existing shares. In win2k you just click a box to enable it.
