Mac Pro hard drive upgrade kits

The Mac Pro has 6 onboard SATA ports. Max Upgrades offers two kits for the Mac Pro: a 6-drive kit and an 8-drive kit. The kits are basically drop-in adapters for the optical drive bays. The Mac Pro has 2 optical drive bays, so if you only want 1 internal drive, you can have up to 6 drives internally. If you want 8 hard drives internally, you won't be able to house any optical drives internally, plus you'll need a 2-port SATA controller to supplement the onboard 6-port SATA controller. Pricing is $129 and $145 respectively.

I'm holding out for the 1-terabyte Seagates

ever heard the saying don't keep all your eggs in one basket? i wouldn't keep more then 1TB in my computer. imagine what would happen if your PSU suddenly crapped out and took out everything? it doesn't happen often, but it can. but damn, 8TB inside one computer?

imagine the possibilities!

that's what backup is for I only have 100GB on my MBP and I keep it backed up to two different external FW drives. One contains both my backups and my wife's Windows PC's backups. The other is dedicated specifically to me since it's actually a Linux box I have at work.

It's an interesting idea. Personally, if I needed more than 4HDD's in a computer, I would look to an external FW800 case.

Eight HDD's in a computer is bound to get hot! Also, you'd need to mount your optical drives externally if you got this kit.

It seems like a nice option if you only use one internal optical drive. You could do six 1-terabyte drives in RAID 5 for a total of 5 terabytes usable space. That would be awesome

It would be awesome, until your case melted.
