So, just setup my Mac Mini and i LOVE IT!!!!

Now, what are some must have programs on a mac?

I'm going to order the OEM Photoshop Elements 3, but what other programs are indeed worthy of my money and/or free download?

garageband is fun to play with, but i havent really tried any other music creation software titles, so i dont have anything to compare it too. I think my favorite game is called pocket tanks. Its the typical 2 tanks alternating turns and shooting back and forth trying to get the most hits. Ilife is nice, but i dont use half of the programs with it.

I have found some of the best software just searching through the downloads at apples site under the osx->downloads.

You could try myth tv if you want to tie it into a home entertainment center.

Play around with X11. For backing up dvds, i use a program called dvd backup. I have a tibook so it works great for watching movies on the road to extend the battery life.

edit...wow, i think my post is the most unorganized post i have ever made....lol

Macs are general-purpose computers too, you know.

GUI enhancements, system tools, utilities

Meteorologist (Freeware)
Displays weather forecast on the menu bar.

TinkerTool (Freeware)
Configure OS settings not available through Apple's own System Preferences program. Nice tool, but read before wildly checking dialog boxes

SnapNDrag (Freeware) | Snapz Pro X (Shareware)
Two fine Screenshot utilities. (By the way, you can change the .pdf suffix of OS X screenshots to .tiff without problems...)

Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware)
Copy your installation of Mac OS X to another harddrive, create images and backups. (Doesn't support OS X 10.4 yet)

DropDMG (Freeware) | Zippist (Freeware)
An easy way to create OS X disk images (or .zip files, respectively)

MPlayer (Beta) | Video Lan Client (Beta)
The best alternative movie players out here.

MEncoder (Beta)
Converts DVDs to DIVX/XVID.

Delocalizer (Freeware)
Removes non-english language packs for 800 MB of space on your hard disk.

MenuMeters (Freeware)
Displays LAN traffic, cpu usage and other things on the menu bar.

USB Overdrive (Shareware)
If your USB peripheral won't work, USB Overdrive will do the job.

Programs

GraphicConverter (Shareware)
Very good digital image handler. I can't name a graphic format it can't read yet.

PageSpinner (Shareware) | SubEthaEdit (Freeware for private use) | BBEdit (Shareware)
Some good HTML and/or text editors.

iCab (Beta)
Sadly this webbrowser gets little attention. It has some good features (like the HTML validator). You may give it a try...

Adium X (Beta) | Fire (Freeware)
Instant Messaging and IR Chat applications.

Time Burners

Fish Fillets (Freeware)
Help two secret agent fishes to do their job... by solving puzzles. Nice graphic art in my opinion.

Glider Pro X (Freeware)
OS X port of a Mac OS classic. Navigate your glider through a house by profiting from air vents and avoiding water drops.

For more freeware games go here (attention, 2 MB of screenshots). The text is in German, but the screenshots speak for themselves.

No, not trying to start a flamewar. I just cant find any redeeming qualities with OSX and would really like to get some insight from folks that *love* it. If i could *like* it just a little it would make working in my office that much easier.

If i wanted to run *nix i would. Can you point out where those commands are accessable via the GUI, and not command line? This is a discussion about OSX afterall, not *nix.

Because it knows how to use RAM much better than Windows ever will. Because it can run FCP and Windows can't. Because it can run Soundtrack and Windows can't. Because it can run LiveType and Windows can't. Because it can run Motion and Windows can't. Because it just feels sleeker than Windows.

I love my PC, but I haven't had time to learn Liquid 6 yet and with the new FCP Studio coming out I don't know if I should even bother.

You're welcome. Personally I prefer Mozilla over Safari because it has more detailed security and JavaScript configuration options and features Type Ahead Search. Plus it's possible to open context menus by clicking around half a second so there is no need to do this stupid CTRL-clicking all the time on a laptop. Safari isn't bad either (and features the privacy modus mentioned in this forums few weeks ago), it comes down to personal taste. Safari's first release was kind of clunky but that changed maybe.

An overview of Mac webbrowsers can be found here, but keep in mind that it is nearly two years old and not fully valid (Internet Explorer really is a dead horse now while other browsers made some progresses).

Check out the OmniGroup. Their graphing/flowcharting prorgram - OmniGraffle - is outstanding. They also make an outlining program - OmniOutliner. I can't live without either of these.

I prefer Firefox, but I haven't bothered to get it for Mac OS X yet.

When I used it earlier this year, firefox for OSX sucked (mainly because the scrolling was incredibly choppy). I used to use Camino, which is an OSX browser from the mozilla group. That worked quite well. But under Tiger, Safari 2 appears to be the fastest Mac browser (and it also is very stable), so that's what I use now.
