macbook Core Duo dies when it gets to 53C?

Last night my macbook Core Duo froze and then I tried unsuccessfully to boot it for about half an hour -- there were *random* problems -- repeated chime sound, repeated optical drive ejecting, freezing during boot or giving me the "your computer needs to restart" message in 4 languages, or booting and immediately freezing.

MAIN PROBLEM:
I'm running a temp monitor now, and it seems to mess up in this same way whenever the on-die temp sensor gets to around 53C. If I let the computer sit turned off for a few minutes, it boots up and works again until it gets to this temperature once more.

Why would this be? Core Duo chips should be able to get much hotter.

there where issues with the first releases of the macbooks where they randomly shutdown when it gets too hot, they have released a couple of firmware updates that would fix the problems. if not the heatsink would have to be replaced or the logic board, if it is out of warranty the heatsink would be the least expensive part to replace

What temp monitor are you using? I know that for whatever reason, core duo processors tend to report ~15 degrees cooler in temp monitoring programs then they really are. While still not completely horrid, that does put you pretty close to 70 which would be the upper end of safety

I've only heard about that 15C discrepancy issue affecting C2Qs, not CDs or C2Ds.

In any case, I have a Dell Inspiron with a Core Duo, and it seems to be fine at temps higher than 53C (running Orthos, for example), so I don't know that it's a chip issue.

Actually, it affects all G0 steppings, which entails both G0 stepping Q6600's, and all E6*50 C2D's. You're right, though, it doesn't affect any of the Core Duo's.
