Do Macbooks really last hours like they advertise?

I am getting a bit sick of Windows and my Dell laptop and may get a Macbook next time around. Probably a year or two. I have had my Dell laptop about 1 year and have already replaced both the battery and the power cable once and they are starting to go out again.

Now I get about 1 - 1.5 hours on my battery with internet use or word processing. With a new battery it is about 1.5 - 2 hours. This is with a 14.4 inch screen. I would like to get back into some video projects, so that is part of the reason I want a Macbook.

I would like to do a 4 hour writing session without worrying about running out of power.

Ok, my mother's BlackBook (2nd gen, early Core 2 Duo) gets about 3-4 hours of life out of a single charge, and she uses it on battery very, very often.

My MacBook (1st gen) gets about 2-2.5 hours of battery, the battery is about 1.5 years old.

Anand has tested the new MacBook Pro and records 5.5-8 hours of battery life depending on use (5.5 heavy video watching, 8 light web browsing), and Walt Mossberg of the WSJ got similiar results. Others have tested the new ones and getton 3.5-4 hours of life, but based on anecdotal evidence from people that have purchased them here, and am therefore more inclined to believe Anand and Walt.

So, worst case, you are looking at your 4 hour target. Best case, double that. All on a battery that is designed to maintain at least 80% life after 5 years (assuming a linear loss then you would lose 4% total life per annum, so after 5 years you can still expect to get 5.5 hours or so of life out of the battery) and is allegedly good for $1000 charges.

The cost to replace the battery is $129, which includes shipping both ways. The cost for a new battery for the White MacBook, or older Unibody is... $129. So it is in no way more expensive should that come up.

And to be completely clear, the battery is not non-removable, it is simply non-user servicable. Meaning that when third party batteries (or even Apple branded ones) show up on the market, if you don't get it serviced by an Apple Tech, they will disregard the entire machine (if I recall their rules correctly). It is only held in place by 3 screws, not soldered, so replacing it is not a chore.

Also, Apple has been good thus far about rectifying errors, like when about 9 months worth of MacBooks and MacBook Pros all had bad cells. Both Tyranicus and myself received free replacement batteries that way. Apple will also replace the power adapter, in or out of warranty, if it starts to fray.

If you are looking for power+battery life, look no further than the MacBook Pros. There is, for example, the Acer TimeLine series, but they are significantly less powerful systems.

From my own experience, Apple battery life is pretty accurate. I was getting six hours on my iBook G4 1.33ghz with Wifi turned off and brightness on minimum. Bang on what Apple said it was. If there's a single reason to buy an Apple laptop, battery life is it. You have to go to less powerful systems or netbooks to get those kinds of ratings in the real world. OS X is nicely tuned for energy efficiency.

Well, for one, the OP states that he is sick of Windows, so his running Vista is less likely.

However, he will still get 5-6 hours of light browsing/word processing out of the battery as Anand's second article on the new MacBook Pro showed

I used to run XP in bootcamp before Leopard came out. Back then the battery was new, and I'd get 3.5 hours easy with wifi on and doing whatever engineering students do at school. In OS X, that is. In XP I'd get about (not more than) one hour. 2.33 GHz 15" mbp.

I programmed for 3 hours last night using my macbook pro with the dual video cards in it. I was on the performance card and not the battery life. After I was done I kept the machine running while I watched Burn Notice. I have my notebook set to not sleep or darken the display (so I can monitor my IM's from work). It shutdown in the last 10 minutes of burn notice.

Is this the first unibody MacBook Pro or the second? The first had the regular battery, the second has the larger battery.

This was my home notebook which is the first Unibody with dual video cards and the replaceable battery. . My work machine is the 2nd unibody with the non-replaceable battery, but I haven't used that one yet when i'm not connected to a power adaptor (it mostly sits in my office). I'll take it home this weekend and see how long it takes to run down. (However my work notebook does not have the dual video cards)

WHAT?? How do you guys get your batteries to last so long? I've had my 2nd battery (a Truepower for MBP) since October and it's at 35% health. I just unplugged it from charging and it says it'll last me 1h:20m (with Wifi on, Firefox, adium, Mail running, screen brightness at 6/16). My first battery crapped out after a year. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? I'd hate to have to shell out another $100 for a battery after only 9 months :/

Well, Leopard did cut the battery life in my iBook G4 quite a bit. Dropped by about an hour over Tiger. I think it's because Leopard uses the GPU more. I'm thinking Snow Leopard is probably going to have some energy efficiency refinements.

I'll believe it when I see it. I went back and looked at the keynote a couple days ago (to see what the deal was with the TomTom iPhone/hopefully-also-iPod-Touch kit and app) and checked out the SL part. Interesting stuff, but Apple is like every other computer company -- the numbers often don't translate to real life.

How often do you use the battery on your MBP? I mean really use it? How many cycles and how old is the battery? You can check this info in the System Profiler.

Well, that might be part of the problem, it doesn't sound like you are using it on battery enough.

I 've had a MBP 13 for a couple of weeks now, and use the battery every day, sometimes just a couple of hours, sometimes 5+ hours, and apple's claims seem accurate to me. I have noticed that my USB Sprint broadband modem uses a lot more juice than the built-in airport wifi does...battery life of 5 hours with Sprint modem vs 6.5 to 7 hours on airport.

I can't! I cycled the battery about 5-6 times a week for about a month but the health went down enormously!

Trupower? is that a 3rd party one? Do you have the old aluminum MBP or the unibody one?
I actually don't think it's a good idea to cycle your batteries all that often. With Li batteries I am under the impression you should keep them topped off.

Internal batteries on the 15" MBP didn't exist until June of this year. And have yet to be sold by a third party.
