This is a request for information and/or a request for an article if this information does not already exist.

I have been unable to find comprehensive windows gaming benchmarks for the MacBook Pro Core Duo. It would be great if someone could link me to some benchmarks, or if Anand could do an article reviewing the windows gaming performance of the MacBook Pro.

Like many mac fans out there I've been used to having a windows box for gaming, and a mac for work. With an X1600 graphics card it's clear the new MBPs are not going to be screaming boxes, but how do they measure up to the competition? That's information I'd like to know, it would help me decide if now is the time to upgrade or not.

My boyfriend has a M1710 for example which is a screaming dell gaming lap top, and is just awesome I can heartily recommend it. I know that the new Macbooks will not perform in that range, but I'd love to see a comparision so I could weigh the advantages apple brings versus the gaming performance that the M1710 offers.

Some information I already have:

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html

This suggests that the X1600 performs at a little under half the overall power of the 7900 GTX (both mobile)

http://www.barefeats.com

This has lots of mac bookmarks, howerever there are no windows benchmarks, and most are at bizarre resolutions that can't really be compared to windows performance.

P.S. I hate steve jobs for not throwing a decent graphics card in the new macbook pros :/

I have an Asus W3J with a 256MB MR X1600 and it scores around 2150 in 3dMark06, so figure that the 128MB MR X1600 (and also clocked lower than standard) found in the 15" MBP will score lower than that. The 256MB MR X1600 found in the 17" MBP should perform about the same, though it is a possibility that Apple clocks down the MR X1600 in the 17" MBP to reduce the heat output.

From what I've been able to do with my machine: Play FEAR at 1024x768 with medium settings and play UT2004 @ Native Resolution (1280x768) with most settings at normal/high.

All in all, if you want to play a lot of games, just go with a PC with at least a MR X1600 or GeForce 7600 Go (Changing over the the 7700 Go). If you want to use OSX a lot, with only a little gaming in a Windows environment, then go with the Mac.

and I don't know what's wrong with the x1600?!?! that's a pretty good GPU for a laptop. it beats most other laptops out there except the POS dell XPS's running nvidia cards. The GPU in the MacBook Pros are underclocked though. I've been able to do a mild overclock (400/400) to get it to run Oblivion pretty well in Windows. I also play FEAR at the settings brainonska511 has just fine.

Maybe i just expect too much, myboyfriend having a 7900 GTX probably doesn't help! His notebook is just insane.

I had to wear special orthopedic shoes for a year from carrying around a Dell laptop.

I'll take the macbook, any day.

Is there any other laptop under 6lbs that has a better video card? Or is the 1600 as good as it comes at the moment in that range?

The only two decent video cards you'll find in a <6lbs notebook is the 7600 Go (rolling into the 7700Go) or the MR X1600 (maybe X1700 or X1650 if ATI refreshes the mobile radeon line).
