Macrobe Flash Player runs like molasses

Some time ago I updated Flash Player to run again more than half of the Flash content out there. Now everything "works" again but the performance is deplorable. Especially when playing videos I often run into problems. The videos then play with 1-2 fps and the audio gets out of synch.

I can't believe a computer built in 2005 can't stomach a 320x240 pixel video anymore.

I have the current Player, version 10,0,22,87, and an iBook G4 @ 1.33 Ghz with 1.5 GB RAM and OS X 10.4. The problem occurs with all browsers. Videos that don't work are for example:

If there's still somebody out there with a PPC machine I'd be grateful for feedback if it works for them, and for any ideas how to solve this issue, of course.

I've a Powerbook 1.67Ghz G4 and they both run pretty poorly. The second video runs a bit better than the first although its still not completely smooth. I've just accepted the fact that PPC processors where just complete piles of POS. Its no wonder Apple dumped them and went with Intel a few years back.

I don't think the processors are trash. I think it's the fact that Adobe doesn't optimize for anything but Windows. They still don't, even with the newer Intel chips in Macs. But the increased processing power of the C2D has helped most stuff run decently. Still obnoxious, though.

Trust me guys, it isn't just the PPC. I have had flash videos run my CPU up to full utilization on both cores, with my temps jumping to 72C, just for a 5 minute video.

It is a completely ridiculous situation and I don't know what the solution is since Adobe certainly isn't going to fix the problem anytime soon. And boycotting Flash is a little tricky.

Yea.. I wish Adobe would take a more active role in Flash development for OS X, but I think that's still a long way away.

Thanks for the answers. So my only hope is that Silverlight gets off the ground and motivates Adobe to improve Flash Player in the future...

Flash just flat out sucks for Mac. Its the only thing (sans video encoding) that pegs my cpu at past 70%, which considering its a simple site such as youtube is just plain sad. Adobe needs to work on their OSX build.

Does Adobe take an active role in anything they make? 64-bit is going mainstream and Windows Vista has been packaged with 64-bit IE since day one, yet Adobe still doesn't have 64-bit Flash.

And to think, Flash 9 was far worse.

This isn't even a Mac-only problem. Although my Windows PC doesn't suffer framerate issues too often, Flash videos very often max out one of my CPU cores.

Yea, the proof that Adobe COULD make it better is the Windows version. Yea, Flash still sucks, but they could definitely make it run more efficiently if they just tried.
