Ahhh, found an approximate number of cattle in the united states... Over 100 million.

And, a little more than 20,000 were tested for mad cow disease last year.. That's pretty aggressive, huh? That's almost 1 out of every 1000 that gets tested when it's butchered.

Fat and docile, big and dumb,
They look so stupid, they aren't much fun,
Cows aren't fun.

They eat to grow, grow to die,
Die to be et, the hamburger fry,
Cows well done.

Nobody thunk it, nobody knew,
No one imagined the great cow guru,
Cow Se Tongue.

He spoke about justice, but nobody stirred,
He felt like an outcast, alone in the herd,
Cows doldrums.

He mooed: "We must fight, escape or we'll die,"
Cows gathered around, 'cause the steaks were so high,
Bad cow pun.

But then he was captured, stuffed into a crate,
Loaded onto a truck, where he rode to his fate.
Cows are bummed.

He was a scrawny calf, who looked rather woozy,
No one suspected he was packing an Uzi
Cows with guns.

They came with a needle to stick in his thigh,
He kicked for the groin, he pissed in their eye,
Cow well hung.

Knocked over a tractor and ran for the door,
Six gallons of gas flowed out on the floor,
Run cows, run!

He picked up a bullhorn and jumped up on the hay,
"We are free roving bovines, we run free today!
We will fight for bovine freedom,
And hold our large heads high,
And we will run free with the buffalo or die!"
Cows with guns.

They crashed the gate in a great stampede,
Tipped over a milk truck, torched all the feed,
Cows have fun.

Sixty police cars were piled in a heap,
Covered in cow pies, covered up deep,
Much cow dung.

Black smoke rising, darkening the day,
Twelve burning McDonald's,
have it your way.

The President said: "Enough is enough,
These uppity cattle, it's time to get tough."
Cow dung flung.

The newspapers gloated, folks sighed with relief,
Tomorrow at noon, they would all be ground beef.
Cows on buns.

The cows were surrounded, they waited and prayed,
They mooed their last moos, they chewed their last hay,
Cows outgunned.

The order was given to turn cows to whoppers,
Enforced by the might of ten thousand coppers,
But on the horizon surrounding the shoppers,
Came the deafening roar of chickens in choppers.

Note to self, don't eat cow brains in the future...

Yeah those testing numbers are low
Here in Canada we can track a cows origin right back to the farm something the US doesn't do
If you have 100mil that mean at any given time there could be 10 in the system of naturally occuring cases
BUT most of the time these don't get put into the food system .
The one found here in Canada wasn't even going to slaughter it was going to rendering 'glue' when they tested it
Japan expects EVERY cow to be inspected, up here we test everything over 2 years now. . .

remember 2 years ago, England slaughtered 10's of thousands of livestock and burned their remains to stop this diesease? if that happens in the US it will be a huge economic disaster.

That was Foot and Mouth which so many animals were killed for, and that disease does not affect humans. BSE only affected a relatively small number of animals, and only the affected ones were killed.

It is not transmittable by direct contact (except mother/child through blood or milk), it can only be transmitted by consumation or injection of infected material. The infections in Europe were from feeding cows remains of infected animals, chances are high that the infection in the US is through injection of growth hormones from an infected animal. This is banned in a lot of countries, but the US allows it as it boosts the size and growth speed of cows, and therefor allows you to produce more meat in a shorter period.
If one animal was injected with the material chances are that all the cows at that farm were injected with the same material, and possibly more farms.

It was a so-called "downer" animal, meaning it was unable to walk when it reached the slaughterhouse, which under USDA rules triggers automatic testing.

awesome that they SHIP OUT meat from sick animals BEFORE testing it... real smart. its like eating diseased monkeys

I agree....WTF???? You see a symptom of mad cow, but you still decide to send off the meat for consumption, before the test results have come back??? The only explaination that I can see is that greed is fueling this type of moronic logic.

The question I've not seen raised yet is, which contestants on Fear Factor are going to die from mad cow disease? They are always fvcking feeding those jackasses cow spinal cords and brains and $hit. Hmmm...wonder if $50k is worth it now?

?In 1996, variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD) was detected in humans and linked to the mad cow epidemic. Eating contaminated meat and cattle products is presumed to be the cause.
?Both are fatal brain diseases with unusually long incubation periods, often lasting years.

getting it does not guarantee death, but it'd probably cause brain damage and take years to do so. think of it as a slow SARs, if tens of thousands get it and a few hundred die, its still significant.

Uhh.... 1,000 cases of mad cow diesease, not CJD.

I stopped eating beef a little while ago as sort of a penance type of thing...then when I started trying it again I found I couldn't digest it very well. This whole situation gives me even less incentive to build back up my digestive tolerance for it.
