remember 2 years ago, England slaughtered 10's of thousands of livestock and burned their remains to stop this diesease? if that happens in the US it will be a huge economic disaster.

Yeah, if one cow was found to have it... think of how many there are that haven't been found. Sorta like finding an ant lost in your living room... there's gotta be more.

On a side note, one can only catch bovine spongiform encephalitis (sp?) if the meat isn't thoroughly cooked right?

Only 50 people died? It's a terrible way to go though...

Nope. The causative agent has been known to survive radiation treatment. Keep in mind that humans do not get BSE, they get Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

No, burning the meat to a charred and blackened crisp over a 1000° flame won't destroy the protein that causes BSE.

The News is saying that they only tested this cow because it was falling over... That's not a good way to test your food supply.

As far as only 50/100/whatever amount of people dying in the UK, keep in mind that they test every cow that is slaughtered.

Also, isn't all of the left over parts of the cow(not eaten by us) just passed on to other animals? For instance, isn't the milk used to feed calves made from cow plasma?
