Mad Dog 16x DVD-ROM here at CompUSA. I got one of these at OM for $29.99 (after MIR) last week and the "Mad Dog" turned out to be an Artec DHM-G48.

FYI. In another thread, there were some complaints about Mad Dog rebates. As always, buyer beware.

Scored one. Mine is labeled ULTIMA ELECTRONICS Taiwan.
Model DHM-G48. Reads CDs at 48x (max).
Seems OK so far.

I picked one up..seemed like a decent price...

As for the rebate keep all the info and if the rebate does not come in go back to compusa and if the manager is good he will make good on it

My opinion on the drive is mixed..I ripped a dvdrom with it...it was slow ..rip speed was 4.5x...My liteon 163(16x dvd) would rip at 7x and up.....it was not loud ....quality seems ok

Question is this a least a good dvdrom...from a quality standpoint..never heard of Artec...but that means nothing...couple of years ago I never heard of liteon either

hi i just bought a new mad dog 16x dvd rom from compusa, this drive is loud and it shakes a bit, this drive is a little bit smaller than my other drive, it doesn't fit on my dell dimension drive bay tightly. after installing the rom, xp detected the new hardware and installed itself, but when i put in a few cds, they would all open up as "Track00" and recognize it as a windows media file. if i open it through my computer, it detects as audio cd. does anyone know what the problem is here? what can i do to fix this? i tried uninstalling the drivers, and have xp detect the drive, and install the drivers itself, but it still does the same thing.

trying going into device manager and deleting the drive and uninstall it by removing the ide cable and power cable...reboot. The try shuting down and reinstall the hardware and try again...

I put it into my system and there did not seem to be any issue with WinXP pro auto detecting and installing it

It's a pretty decent DVD-ROM drive. It plays the CDR-s that was burned using a 16x TDK and also, DVD+R as well. The tray is slow coming out and shakes quite a bit. When it spins, you do hear the sound but most drives do that anyway. The Cyberlink PowerDVD software that comes with it works great with the drive.

You'll have to register the drive with Mad-Dog to get the rebate. The email from Mad-Dog came back immediately. Now, let's see how long the rebate takes.

My 2cents.

For those of you that bought a Mad Dog product and did not register your product. Did you happen to get approved on your rebate submission? Just curious. I sent in a Cendyne rebate not too long ago and didn't register the product, but it appears that my rebate is processing fine.

bestbuy had one of these.... it was another off brand, rebadged ULTIMA/ARTEC basically.

i took it back cause it couldn't read cd-r's period. couldn't read audio cd's. couldn't even read the included software cd! this was on winxp pro...

search some other forums, some ppl had the same prob. read dvd's fine.... but i didn't wanna mess with this brand.
