I always tell myself I won't be buying Madden for the year and I always do.. Hoping I stick to it this year.

I had a fair amount of fun with NCAA 2012 last year so I may give Madden another go around this year. I'm not really sure if I want to as I firmly disagree with EA's online code practices and such but you really have no choice now that we live in a duopoly....or in this case a straight up monopoly.

Y'all could just not buy it... It's not all that difficult. I haven't bought a Madden game in... well, ever, I think. My buddy got me one for my birthday a few years back, but he played it way more than I did. Complaining about the business practices of EA with regards to the Madden license and then continuing to buy it year after year is self-defeating and hypocritical.

I must assume you are directing your post at me, obviously so, and as such I have to question your reasoning for this statement. Beyond that, if I did not purchase any EA games or games from devs/pubs that use codes, DRM, etc that I would be left with about 5% of the market to choose from.

I feel that by purchasing Borderlands 2 to the tune of 3 copies and a loot chest that I am making a pretty huge statement to these companies about their business practices. Here I am, plenty of disposable cash, want good new games without the greed based bullshit; get it the fuck together please gaming industry.

PS: And do something about the cheating while you're at it FFS. It's not cool, even in single player it's garbage. Play the damn game, get better, profit.

Who says they keep buying it? I just see one post saying that....that's it.

You know, this is kind of a discussion forum, and discussing, complaining, debating, etc are kind of the name of the game on here. And if not here, where?

It's one thing to whine endlessly and still buy the game, but I don't see a ton of that going on here. Not being admitted to, anyway.

According to VGA Chartz numbers (yeah, I know), they are selling fewer and fewer each year:

Madden 2007-9.99=4.49(PS2)+1.77(360)+1.02(XB)+.83(PSP)+.62(GC)+.53(WII)+.50( PS3)+.21(DS)+.03(GBA)

Madden 2008-8.02=2.57(PS2)+2.34(360)+.94(PS3)+.86(WII)+.70(PSP)+.29(XB)+.25( DS)+.08(GC)

Madden 2009-7.77=2.47(360)+1.83(PS3)+1.49(PS2)+.81(WII)+.69(PSP)+.31(DS)+.18 (XB)

Madden 2010-7.39=2.77(360)+2.30(PS3)+.98(PS2)+.70(WII)+.64(PSP)

Madden 2011-6.35=2.59(360)+2.24(PS3)+.68(WII)+.50(PS2)+.34(PSP)

Madden 2012-4.64=2.30(360)+1.83(PS3)+.35(WII)+.17(PSP)

So they must be doing something wrong, right?

Wow, if those numbers are legit i'm stunned. I was under the impression their last few years have been record breaking. Is that 4.64 million for 2012? If that's all they sold I'm absolutely amazed.

That should motivate them to make it the best they can this year because when numbers drop that much over that period of time you can surmise one this from it....people are clamoring for the best Madden ever made.

I didn't mean to single anyone out, which is why I didn't reply to a single post. I've heard the sentiment echoed for the last few years: I'm done with EA and Madden, something should be done about it. And then, without fail, people continue buying the games. Look, if you get burned once, shame on you. If you get burned twice, fuck it, one to the house. If you get burned every single year and you keep doing the same thing, well, maybe you're the idiot. Stop doing it.

I loved the NFL 2K series games. I was pissed when EA bought the rights to the NFL license. I swore I wouldn't buy an NFL game when it was a monopoly situation, and I've stuck to my word. So forgive me for getting pissed off at hypocrites who swear they're done with EA and buy Madden every single year. It's the easiest thing in the world to not buy something; I do it every year with that Ferrari 565 I've had my eye on. It's stupid to bitch about a franchise and continue dumping your money into it. STOP GIVING THEM YOUR MONEY IF IT BOTHERS YOU. Seriously. That's all it takes, and it's the easiest thing in the world.

I'm not saying people can't discuss the game. I'm throwing my own discussion of the game in. And my discussion is that the Madden franchise has become awful with the utter lack of competition which they bought through licensing. They've had absolutely nothing driving innovation and the games have become annual updates which offer virtually nothing new apart from updated rosters and barely improved graphics. Madden represents everything I hate about videogames. The series is stagnant and the only possible hope is competition which they can't have until EA's exclusive license with the NFL ends. So there you go. Another shitty Madden sequel and people bitching about how it wasn't up to their expectations and then buying it anyway.

Pardon me, I just threw up in my mouth.

Or just buy it used a few days/weeks later on Amazon.

Save a few bucks, keep a few bucks from going to EA.

One can hope, but I am skeptical of those numbers. I do know that sales are declining, but a 50% drop over 5 years? I really doubt it. You'd see EA resorting to far more gimmicks if that were the case.

EDIT: Of course, nearly 6 million copies of the games sold in 2007 went to platforms no longer supported. Of greater concern for EA must be the decline in sales since 2010.

I buy them a year or so after they come out so I get a new game every year just like the people that buy the newest versions. I just buy mine for $10 instead of $60. I refuse to pay $60 for a game that gets marginal changes and the possibility that it can actually be less fun than the previous year.

I actually do this BUT the last 4 years..... I skip a year. this was the year I was SUPPOSED to buy. Reading the previews. NOPE. It appears to be a 2 year skip.

It has a franchise mode (it is called CCM and can be played offline too). The thing they eliminated, though, is multiplayer offline franchises which sucks.

i know what you mean, but its really up to the nfl to give them that exclusive license. someday they will lose it, and i have no doubt sega will come back with a fury and that salty taste left in everyones mouth from cookie cutter madden games will not be forgotten.
You keep saying Sega. Sega sold off Visual Concepts to Take Two a month after EA signed its exclusivity agreement.

Since NCAA 2003 ive always liked ncaa better than madden. Madden just sucks now, takes too long between plays, and doesnt make sense a lot of the time.

NHL on the other hand is amazing. Even though its basically the same game every year for the most part, for the amount of hours i put into it - spending $15-20 bucks is more than worth it to upgrade to NHL 13. (traded in nhl 12 for 20 something on amazon, and preorderd 13 for like 45 bucks on newegg)

Its funny because I barely watch hockey, and am a much bigger football fan, but i just cant play madden - its just so boring. Even if i hated watching hockey, NHL is just a really fun game.

Madden 13 is pretty fun to be honest, but it isn't without annoying issues:

1. It is no longer possible to have an offline franchise with multiple people, so my brothers and I will continue our offline franchise in Madden 12.

2. Certain settings aren't saved and you have to re-enter at the start of every game (at least in CCM). Setting such as playbooks, conventional vs. gameflow, etc.

3. Seen some weird bugs too. Last night I played Pittsburgh in a preseason game and their punts would only go 20 yards at most, with most of them making it to the line of scrimmage.

4. Another bug had to do with preseaon roster rotations. I played my first drive last night and went to it on 4th and 1. It said I did not make the 1 yard and brought the Steelers offense out. Well, I challenged, won the challenge and got the ball back, and then scored. On the ensuing possession, Pittsburgh put in their backups rather than their starters for their first drive.

Edit: I spoke too soon. It appears there is an off season mode after the first season. Everything about the XP system makes sense except ....for the fact that by the time you progress a player by 1XP for an absorbed amount of XP, the player himself or every other player on the team will be retired. Madden, at least this round, became more of a football manager sim. It definitely takes away liberties we once had, by making it more of a challenge and adding more replay. I can see many people liking this system (besides the random advertisements and the inevitable unlocking xp points for more money), but for some of us who enjoyed making fantasy teams and having complete control over rosters are shit out of luck.

They definitely removed some key things and there are inexcusable bugs, like the punting bug. I don't know how that got by QA. Basically, the damn game substitutes another player for your punter and that's why punts don't go anywhere. I hope that just affects preseason.

What the hell is with these dumbass new members posting b*llshit one or two word responses in threads? Seriously. There have been several of them recently, and they all post meaningless tripe. Does this forum have some kind of restriction on new members posting spam links or video until they reach a certain number of posts? Some gems from "xres625e":

If you can't contribute anything at all to a thread, just stay out.

Anyway, BOT:

I bought Madden 13 last week. First Madden I've purchased since...wow...I guess 2006. Like another poster up there, I've ALWAYS been a bigger fan of NCAA. I enjoy college football more in reality, and I've always enjoyed the NCAA games much more.

That being said, I played the heck out of NCAA 12. And while it was overall very good, it had a LOT of behind the scenes issues that even a solid year of slider tinkering couldn't fix.
My biggest overall gripe with NCAA after all this time, was just TOO much parity. In other words, I tried slider set after slider set, and the FAIR ones would end up playing too close. For example, if I'm playing as Idaho St. against USC, I should have my ass handed to me all day. I didn't. I'd lose, but like 27-30 or something nonsensically close. It never really felt like there was much difference in the teams. And even when I'd play as a great team against a terrible one, it would be too close for realism.
That, and recruiting just downright sucks. It has been virtually unchanged since 2005, and the CPU is TERRIBLE at recruiting years down the line in dynasty.

When I went 13-0 and won the National Championship in my second year of my Colorado Buffaloes dynasty, on hard slider settings, I knew there were some serious flaws in the AI.

Madden so far seems much better balanced, with much more realistic outcomes, and just better football.

I'm 2-2 with my current franchise, trying to rebuild the Jacksonville Jaguars, and all the games have been fun.

P.S. What slider sets are you guys using for CCM?

I've heard the sliders actually play differently in exhibition vs. CC

Have you seen the scores of other games you simulated? QB's are throwing over 50 TD's a season. RB's and DE's are slipping and sliding, and player progressions and the XP system are ploys to get more out of your wallet. The franchise mode in 2013 seems to be playing me more than me playing it.

Every time I'm urged to pick up a Madden or NCAA game, I have to talk myself out of it. I've never played a football game I've really liked (other than Blitz arcade style back in the day). I mostly like hockey games, but even those have gotten too convoluted for me control wise. Not really a bad thing, I'm just too old to care how to do every little maneuver but it is the best way to win.
