Made a kid cry today

some background info. due to my schedule, i get very little sleep, around 5 hours a day. i am up by 5:30 AM most days. i come home and take a power nap anywhere from 4 to 7 PM. i have a little one who naps at this time too so it works out.

now, my neighbors kid, rings my bell every frikkin day (she comes over 10 minutes after school is done, wtf, to play with my older kid). My older one studies and does homework til 7.

I told my neighbor's kid 100 times not to come over before 7. i told her today when i saw her after work. At 5, while i am in deep sleep, lo and behold the bell rings. fffuuuuu. i opened the door half asleep and angry and told the little girl 'for the 100th time, dont ring the bell 7!" i then shut the door and tried to go to sleep again. nope, my little one is up too because of the doorbell.

anyhoo, 10 minutes later my neighbor stops by and asks why his kids is crying. i tell him that his kid doesnt listen. shit, she runs around the neighborhood and darts through streets without looking sometimes. i ask him to keep a closer eye on her and tell her to come back at 7. i dont want that little 7 year old drama queen coming over anymore. am i a mean, grumpy old man or what?

She probably didn't understand what "for the 100th time, don't ring the bell 7" meant. Most people don't have more than 1 bell.
Furthermore, you said you had already told her 100 times, then when you told her again, it was the 100th time (again).
Stop trying to confuse children.
You make as much sense in real life as you do here, that's quite an accomplishment.
She's probably as surprised as we all are that you have children of your own.

She probably can't count and tell time. Kids are impulsive and to her the right time is the time she want's to play. You were wrong in what you did. When explaining the kid to show up at 7 you should have shown her on the clock what that looks like.

Why can't your kid have a friend over after school? Why do you need to be the one that answers the door? If you're a light sleeper taking naps in the middle of the day, you gotta understand you're gonna get woken up sometimes. Like someone else said, get some earplugs or something.

And yeah, yelling at the neighbors kid is a pretty dicky thing to do.

However, I am sympathetic to the OP on this one. He acted poorly, but it's "kinda" understandable under the circumstances.

What he should have done before is now what has happened. Her parents are apprised that you sleep between 4 and 7 and they can now sit down with her and patiently make sure she understands she's not to ring your bell before 7.

But OP, I do hope you feel bad about making that little girl cry. You really shouldn't have let your robe fly open like that while you were yelling at her. She's now gonna' have . . . "questions."

He didn't make her cry- her parents made her cry by not teaching her to pay attention when an adult talks. It wasn't fifteen minutes early, it was TWO HOURS, and he'd told her many times. Seven years old and can't respect other people's property or handle extremely simple instructions? I could handle "don't do X before X" when I was three or four.

However, there are better solutions. Did you tell the kid you're sleeping during that time? Did you ever go talk to her parents? Why don't you tell your kid to go over to their place instead?

The kid next door does not want to wake you in any way, she just wants to hangout with one of your children.

So grow a brain and learn to think, devise a way for your neighbor to communicate with your children, such that she gets a yes no without waking you in the process. After all, your children have privacy rights too. But if they want to interact with your neighbor, you can win win sleep through it.
