FT article on it
Anyone following this here? I'm watching it closely--it seems like it's still riddled with controversy. As you may or may not recall, Aznar was ahead in the polls when these bombs went off three or four days before the elections, and he wound up losing after a cell associating itself with al-Qaeda claimed responsibility and stated that their motives were in response to Aznar's policies in Iraq. Before that, his administration had been hiding evidence implicating al-Qaeda and blaming the bombings on the domestic terrorist group ETA. Apparently there are still conservatives associated with Aznar who claim ETA was responsible, despite plenty of evidence to the contrary.
Also, I noticed that PBS is going to be airing a documentary about these bombings soon as part of their America at a Crossroads series. The timing will be interesting, to be able to watch the documentary as the trial is unfolding. There's a preview of it here: Europe's 9/11
Spain will on Thursday begin the trial of 29 people allegedly behind Europe?s worst terrorist attack, almost three years after bombs on four packed trains in Madrid killed 191 commuters and injured more than 1,700.
The bombing changed the course of Spanish politics and sparked a rift between the left and right over counter-terrorism policy.
