Meridian GPS at Outpost.com

MagellanGPS.com Info

Cheapest price on Pricegrabber is $169 plus shipping. Amazon has it for $179, Buy.com has it for $229. Has US map built-in and takes standard SD memory cards for additional detailed map storage. Average review at Amazon is 4.5/5 stars. I ordered one yesterday and got shipping confirmation today. I know this isn't the best GPS out there, but for $99, it's hard to find something better. Shipping was around $5 for me.

wfay,

Every data cable I've seen is serial. Yes you can buy an adapter. Compgeeks has got this one. Can't vouch for this specific brand but if I didn't have one, I'd buy it. I bought mine from buy.com for $25, six months ago.

Has anyone actually used that particular model? My dad wants a GPS, if this is pretty high quality I might pick one up.

Wow, definitely HOT

I'm tempted to buy this, but I'd never use it, but it's still hot!

My stepdad bought the Meridian Platinum a couple weeks ago, also got the mapsend topo cd for $89, and got in on the rebate offer for $50.00. The Platinum is a pretty nice unit alright, I have also used the Gold. I have never used the plain meridian, but I would think you could count on it. The main difference with the Platinum, is the built in compass, and it also allows you the freedom to hold the gps at pretty much any angle you want, while the other models you have to hold level for them to work right.
We got the software for $89, which wasnt a great price, and besides, I can't remember where. As far as downloading data via the serial cable, it kind of SUCKS. I wish they had usb enabled the thing. It took nearly an hour to download the state of Utah into the unit, and my laptop battery died before it was done! There is also a bug in the software when using the topo software. It clearly stated it in some literature that comes with the unit. So, although we paid for a 64MB sd card, we had to download a patch that would only allow us to use up to 32megs. In addition, although the gps claims to be capable of 128,000 bits per second, the software wouldn't see it at over 19,200 bits per second. Bogus.

Never the less, I still say it is one of the best gps units availible (in a consumer handheld), but it does have some short-comings.

P.S. it is accurate down to like 30 or 40 feet I believe, pretty good, although not good enough for commercial applications like we use at my job, where we need to be accurate to only a couple of feet.

Also, yes, I couldn't aquire even one sattelite inside the cabin (which has a metal roof) but in my truck, it aquired 4 and even 5 sattelites. There are some features which only require one, most features require at least 3.

P.P.S.

Another thing to be aware of, the battery power was nowhere near the claimed 12-14 hours, even without the backlight. And, we bought a 12v adapter for the car, and a seperate data cable, and no ac adaptor (haven't even seen one), well, I assumed I could use the data cable, and later on just pick up a transformer at radio shack or something and plug it in via the little round plugs that all other devices use. Well, no dice. This uses a propiertary (sp?) cable for power and data both, and they are not seperate plugs, so you must buy the combination cables that are made for it. If you order one, you will see what I mean. It is a very strange interface.

I am in the market of a GPS. The GPS will be mainly used in the car.

I am looking Garmin V and Magellan Meridian Plantinum/Gold now.

Garmin V has realtime routing function, but limted meory(19MB), some people said Garmin V's processor is a little slow when doing the rerouting in the driving. Magellan Plantinum has better position accuration, and expandable memory, no realtime routing function.

I never used GPS before, only played some demo for a while in the store.

Any suggestion will be appreciative.

Well I have a tracking number from Airborne Express, so I have some package on its way. If I get it and it's not the GPS, then I'll believe the others at FW.

I have the GPS V, and your comments are mostly accurate. I am not sure how the Vs accuracy compares to the Magellan Plantinum's, but I can say the Vs accuracy is among the best. The routing function of the V adds a lot of value to the unit, as its the cheapest navigation system you can get for your car. This deal is a good price for the unit, but Id strongly reccomend getting the V if you ever are going to be using this in the car, which for most of us, is the most practical application. Although it does cost about 4 times as much as the merdian.

The Fry's in Dallas has this in the Sunday paper, same deal. Good until 12/10.

The only difference between this and the Gold is the base map 2mb vs 8mb. The maps you have loaded overide the base maps.

It is very slow to download the software using the GPS, buy a $20 SD card reader and it is very fast.

I have the Gold version and was very happy with it until I saw this ad. I get better reception than my Dad's Garmin Map 76. It takes a few minutes for thses things to initialize when you first turn them on.

These will do everything a garmin V will do except give driving directions. Hook it up to a laptop with Street Atlus SW , set up a route, turn your laptop into the display and give you visual and voice turn indicators.

There are not many GPS units that are easy to upgrade the memory , I have a 32mb sd card and can get over half of TX on it including all the major city's: Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and Corpus. Thats with the topo map which includes every single street.

I don't have lappy right now. Got a 4550 though :8->

The most holdback for me is Garmin V has 19MB built in memory. I live in Boston. MapSource City Select CD is included with Garmin V Delux package. I live in Boston. I would like know if 19MB build in memory is enough to put Boston area into the Garmin V, when using MetroGuide map.

Opps, just read this, you can hook Garmin V with PDA. I will choose Garmin V then. Thank you, MyBuds.
