I used to play magic... back maybe 4 years ago. I started in 4th edition but i dont believe it was called that. I stopped after ALL the new sets started to come out. Just to many to keep up with. Also, when they banned great cards ie. Royal Assasin i just got fed up with the game.
WOTC bans previous card sets just so you have to buy the new sets to play in tournaments. I used to play with like 10 people in my neighborhood, but when the local card shop closed, we all quit. Black Lotus I MUST have you!!!
I bought these cards just as the "Revised Edition" was closing. I had a wicked white deck full of Veteran Bodyguards, Serra Angels, Howling Mines, and others.
I started around the end of fourth and begining of ice age (or something like that). I stopped right after Mirage came out (crash of the Rhinos!!). I started again with the begining of mercadian masques. I bought a boster box on Egay (great price!) and sold a few booster and took the rest for myself. I now have one of the greatest black creature destruction decks ever. I have a friend who has spent hundreds of dollars on cards just trying to beat me and he still can't . I lost all my cards besides my deck though!
I was taught by Richard Garfield to play MTG at the 1st Gencon that it had premiered.
I remember walking around GenCon with my friends and noticing all of these people using extra tablespace or even floorspace playing some sort of card game. We eventually walked over to one of the players who looked at me w/ the deepest bloodshot eyes you can imagine and he said 'OMG---I have been playing this game since 2 o'clock yeasterday morning! It is the best game I have ever seen!...'
We beelined to the WOTC booth after buying our 1st few packs of cards (I should have bought the whole damn palate...the booth was a madhouse). Garfield was there and I walked over to him (not knowing who he was or even cared) "Can someone teach me this game? I hear it is very good." So he took the time to teach me.
Next thing I know, I am staying up until 2 in the morning playing. We played for ante' back then. The first card I won from a duel was 'rightousness' and I have it on display to remind me of that awesome time at my first GenCon.
Use to play this game like a fiend! My friends got me hooked into this game around the end of Revised. I became one of those hardcore player that ate and slept magic deck strategies. After winning several tournaments, my thirst for this game died down. Now that I have a full time job there's no longer enough time for me to play this game. Still have all them moxes... and dreams of top decking that Masticore
I played from Visions up until Stronghold. It started getting dumber and dumber, with the gold foil cards and fanboy stuff like that. The user base went from 20 - 30 year olds to pre-teenagers. Needless to say I quit.
I have like 2000+ cards I am going to put up on FleaBay if I ever get off my arse and index them.
I used to play, but all of my friends that played moved away. Except for my brother, who always cheats! Needless to say, he's not very experienced. Well, neither am I, but I knew how to play the game.
I first started when a guy from Wizards came to a local comic shop to demonstrate. I think I got like 5 free packs of Beta that day. I must have been 11 or so. I still have almost a full set of unlimited and a lot of Beta cards, even one really messed up Black Lotus and a few near mint beta and unlimited moxes. Also a few of the other goodies like timetwister and a full set of Arabian Nights (including 4 Juzam Djinn's my favorite card ever). They are all in the only deck I have left, a 5 color deck with all my favorite cards in them. I quit when all the new sets came out, I couldn't afford to keep up. Plus the fact they were banning all my old favorite power cards.
I remember laughing my ass off after beating numerous players with a bird of paradise. I used to play a green/red that would crush someone with that little mana bird.
I've been playing but recently stopped because of got into other things to do.
But I had this deck called Lockdown made by my friend and basically I would keep all your stuff tapped and eventually take your own creatures and beat you with them. And if you didn't have a creature deck then I put those psychich venoms on opponents lands and kept forcing them to tap each round. Pretty funny when you take control of an enemies strongest creature with puny sea singer.
Ewwww...I've talked to much already, must stop thinking about this addictive game.
A lot of those old cards, like serra's etc were re-released. Isn't 3rd the same as revised? Some cards needed to be banned because they really through off the balance of power in a tourny (ie: channel) I stopped because they started having stupid abilities, like cycling. How gay is that? It takes all the skill out of building a deck, because if you don't have a card you like, you can just trade it for another. One of my favorite decks to play against was a deck-depletion one. What is that card that makes it so things don't untap?
