I just picked one up for $64.99 after MIR with the use of a $15 OD coupon. I can confirm that mine is an optorite rebadge. DVD info pro shows it as

GENERIC DVD RW 8XMAX
Firmware 110E

It also shows it as supporting HDBurn although it is not mentioned anywhere on the box. It came with Nero and Sonic MyDVD. It also came with a Ritek DVD+R blank disk. I will need to look more into firmware updates as I think there are more recent ones out there but I don't know where to find it yet.

When I went to OM they did not have any on display. I asked a sales associate and she went behind the service desk and got me one. No problems taking the OD coupon either. The model number on the box is BDVDW8D. CD-R specs are 40x24x40x. 12x DVD Read.

I don't have time to burn any disks until; this even, but I'll let you know how it goes.

OM in Bloomington, IL substituted the MagicSpin (BDVDRW8D) with Pacific Digital, which I heard is a Lite-On.

$79.99 out the door. They changed price at the register and they said don't worry about the rebate.

Also substituted the 25 pack of Khypermedia DVD+R with HP DVD+R and no rebates on that either. $9.99 out the door.

coomarlin! i got that exact same thing 2 weeks ago. can you burn HDBurn CDRs with the original 110E firmware? I know that the most recent firmware, 130I (assestek OEM firmware), will disable HDburn, so i flashed with the older, 120E (which can be found @ accesstek's site, make sure it has 3 files in its zip file), and it did its thing, BUT it said it errored at the end of the flash, however it actually did update its firmware (as i posted earlier)... and now everthing works great

I'm sure the model you got is the BTC model because their 8X drive is the "BTC DRW 1008IM". The Optorites model name is "DD0401". BTC drives are notoriously bad, but the few comments over at DVDHelp are all positive.

No, it's not necessarily the BTC model just because the model number starts with the letter "B". I just opened my MagicSpin BDVDRW8D and the drive is stickered as a DD0401. So basically it's the luck of the draw on this one.

Not exactly the newest software package, either. Nero 5, WinDVD 4 and MyDVD 4. But for the price it's worth it. Just glad I got the Oprorite in my box.

Oh, and OM has 25 packs of 2.4X +R Kyphermedia discs for $10 after a $10 mail-in rebate. Not the fastest, but good enough to experiment on the new drive with.

I would wait for the next firmware version before trying to flash this drive to anything newer than it comes with. People have been seeming to have a lot of problems with the flash process. The following is taken from CDFreaks.com but I've read more reports of the same when I was researching this drive.

DD0401 Not Recognized in bios!!!
I upgraded my firmware to the 130E and now my drive is not recognized in Windows nor in the bios. Is there any way to manually reset the firmware? There are alot of jumpers on the back of the drive that are for "factory use only". What are these for?

Chances are, you didn't have a successful flash to the current version - i have the same drive and the same problems, and optorite tech support sent me the required files to "recover" the drive. if you think this might be your problem, let me know, i'll email the files.

Just picked up the Pacific Digital drive at OM for $79.99 out the door - no rebates to deal with since they were out of the MagicSpin advertised.

just curious though - before I open it, I am trying to decipher what drive is in the box. I really prefer the Lite-On 811. But the OM had an open box Pacific Digital at the store - and I snuck a peak inside and saw the drive was a rebadged BTC. Checked the boxes - and the BTC had a serial number on the box beginning with P. Looked at two other sealed packages - one had serial number beginning with P, the other had serial number 43234601xxxx.

Anyone who has bought this pacific digital and opened it - can you post what you have (A Lite On or ???) and the serial number. Thanks !!!

I think it looks as though from your post it could be an optowrite maybe? DO a search for D43010 here . Just a guess though.

If anyone can pick one up for me, I'd appreciate it. I'll pay for the drive + shipping of course. The OM near me has closed =(

Same here, but got mine in Irvine CA. I wonder what the difference is between the 811 and the 851.

Where is the best place to find firmware updates for optorite based drives? Mine has the 110E firmware which I'm not sure I'll change until I find out more about the other updates.

Thanks Pinan. Was there any blank media in the box with the Lite-on drives? I got the 811 and it only came with PowerDVD 4.0 and Sonic MyDVD 4.0.

OK, saw enough posts here and elsewhere - anything with a serial number beginning in 4 is a Lite-On 811 or 851. The ones that begin in P are BTC drives. Just opened my package - LiteOn 811 - sweet

Picked up one at Hamburg OM in Lexington, KY around 4:00 pm. No problems, $79.99 + tax out the door for a PD = LiteOn (not sure what version or even what the difference is for that matter) drive. Mfg. Date of December 2003.

Will install tonight. I've already sold my Iomega (NEC 1300) drive for more than this....assuming that this drive is as good as the NEC drive. If not, I'll let them have this one or return it.

Thanks OP!

Yeah, that was a bummer no blank disc. I think the difference between the 811 & 815 is Black or Biege bezel?
