Hmmm. Guess it depends on how you look at it, as the Optorite is firmware upgradeable (when released, not yet ) to a +/- 8x (from the manufacturer, not some hack). Is the Liteon? NoOooOOOoOOoOooO!

Thanks for all the helpful info.

Tried my local OM today and MagicSpin was OOS. Saw their little spreadsheet showing Pacific Digital as the subsitute, so the girl checks the computer and it shows 17 of the PD on hand.

She could not get anyone to find any, finally the manager comes & tells me the computer is never accurate, and the PD is not in stock. Just took his word for it but is this normal for the computer to be way off like that?

He said to try tomorrow night they might have something in.

My OD was out of both the MagicSpin and the PD (surprise, surprise). I asked about a raincheck and he said he could give me one and honor the $50 instant but not the $50 MIR. So, I asked if he could give me a raincheck for the substitute drive and reminded him that the sub was $79.99 out the door with no MIR to "honor" and he looked kind of puzzled and, after a long pause, he said "I can do that."

Now I have my raincheck for a $79.99 PD! We'll see if it every comes in. It will probably be just like the raincheck I got for the DVD+RW discs a few weeks ago. I don't think that raincheck is worth the paper it is printed on...

The only good advantage I see about getting the PD is that the rebate is instant. As far as the drives are concerned the specs are nearly identical. The performance reviews show them to be very close in all aspects. The Lite-On reads slightly faster, but the Opto has the advantage of supporting HD-Burn (really cool feature by the way). And as the poster mentioned above Optorite has already confirmed that they will release a firmware update that will support 8X -R writing.

I've seen some other people posting in forums that the Lite-On has a proven track record whereas the Optorite is a realatively new company. Well I remember when I bought a Lite-On 16x CD-R drive and my friends with Yamaha and Plextor drives gave me hell for it. Turned out to be a great drive. Hopefully the same applies to the 401.

I have compiled a listing of serial numbers/drive types posted here and on FatWallet. From what data has been posted, there does appear to be a pattern with the exception of the serial numbers for the black-bezel Lite-On. The 851S drives all have "51" or "52" as the fifth/sixth digits. The 811S have "45", "46" or "48" as the fifth/sixth digits. The 811S black-bezel have all been reported as starting with 43035100xxxx (the 851S with "51" are 431351xxxxxx or 481351xxxxxx). If you have a Lite-On DVD drive listed below with an incomplete serial number (ie. less than the first 7-8 digits), post the serial number and I'll update the list below.

Also include whether your drive has "8x DVDRW Dual Format IDE Kit" or "DVD Internal 8X Dual Rtl" listed above the serial number on the retail box, as this also appears to be a way of distinguishing which drive is which....

lOk... last ditch effort.

Anyone know of availability of the PD sub in south LA, Long Beach, OC areas of SoCal?

If so, PM me here or email me at russwjohns@aol.com

Or if some kind soul from the SoCal area could email me a receipt scan that I might try to use to PM this deal, you'd have my heartfelt gratitude!

thanks,
...russ

FYI, just posted this in the other thread (AT #3 I think) for all you 851S owners who are jealous of the 811S guys being able to do bitsetting...

I have an 851S....

Just checked out that thread.. All I can say is a big fat THANK YOU!!!! I can now do bitsetting AND burn my RICOHJPNR01's at 8x! Haven't tested this 2.4+RW bug thats in this firmware though, no +RW media right now. Here is what I did:

A. Downloaded GS0A firmware, Lite-On Flash Tool, and Easy Hex Editor from download.com
B. Backed up my current hacked firmware using Lite-On flash tool. (GS08 edited to allow 8x +R burns)
C. Updated to GS08. Found that the bitsetting tool now works. No 8x though, will have to rehack.
D. Backed up GS0A firmware (did this as an easy way to get it in .bin format, the litefirm tool didn't work)
E. Hacked it to allow 8x on the Ricoh's. (FOR THE LOVE OF PETE, BE VERY CAREFUL EDITING YOUR FIRMWARE!!)
F. Updated firmware with new hacked version.
G. Burn your Imation DVD+R's from OD at 8x and a DVD-ROM Book Type!! Woo-Mother-F'ing Hoo!!!

Thanks again and happy flashing

Tom

Updated from GS08 to GS0A firmware. Changed BitSet (with BookType.exe) from DVD+R to DVD-ROM, burned a DVD-Video with Nero. After burning confirmed with DVDInfoPro 2.27 that BookType is DVD-ROM.

Now all I need is the hacked GS0A firmware for the RICOHJPNR01 4X DVD+R so I can burn them at 8X.

Update

Get the hacked GS08 and GS0A Firmware here. Successfully burned a DVD-Video at 8X.

yep and this coming week they've got the Khypermedia 8x +- for $69.99 AR which they'll probably be sold out of quickly if they even have stock.

Well I finally got by OM today today to pick up Turbo Tax and figured I would ask about the DVD burners I heard they had on sale and they were out of both except they had one PD (lite-on) that had just been returned. I took it for 80 bucks.

Since mine has been opened could someone please confirm what software was supposed to be included ?

Do you guys open the box when you get home or check to see if it is Liteon at the store? Can you tell it is a Liteon without opening the box?

Not sure yet why it was returned, so far it has installed and been recognized by my system and I do have the correct software by your confirmation..I will test a a disc shortly and see if all is good.

After reading the hot deals threads I had a pretty good idea that it was a liteon, but the box on this one had already been opened and as we looked through it to check for missing items i saw the liteon label.

No, I've read a few posts that said lite-on had to change vendors for the "pick up head" (whatever that is!) and that is the difference between the 811s and the 851s. All of the people who said they got a black bezel got the 811s model.

Well I'm finally happy!

Last night I stopped by the OfficeMax close to the wings place, and asked them if they had any of the advertised DVD players in stock. The lady grabbed the manager and he went back into the stock room to grab one, but said that they were out of stock and gave me a substitute drive, at the AR price of $79.99. I was thrilled and didn't even think to check the box before leaving. So when I get home I pull the drive out of the bad and the serial # started with a P, thus I was let down about getting a BTC drive.

So last night and today I contemplated giving the drive a chance, but was determined to get a Lite-on. I mean hey, how great is it to get a $200 8x DVD±R/RW for $80 with no rebate involved (although I hate tax!). . So I called another OM, and they said they had a number of substitution drives available. So I lug the BTC drive up to OM with me, and ask for the substitution drive. So the sales rep calls the manager, who goes into the stock room and grabs a drive. First thing I do is check the serial number on the outside of the box, and sure enough, it started with 482. When I get to the checkout I ask if there are more of that same drive, which the manager confirmed. So I ask if I could get another one and exchange it for the one in my car, and she says yes.

So I go out to the car, and she goes and grabs another one. I had to explain to her how, although they are the same drive, that they are different. She didn't grasp it, so she lets me open the drive from their store, and I showed her how they are two different manufacturers. One of the reps, who was a bit more computer savvy, was there observing, so I made sure to comment how the Lite-on drive was better than BTC, which he also confirms.

So in the end, I now have 2 Lite-on drives. I thought not to press my luck and ask her to check the boxes for one that says "Black Bezel" I figure it'd be easier just to buy 2 black bezels online!

BTW, I got 2 of the 811S - serial #'s 432345010483 & 482346002421
