OK I just bought a nice shinny new huge 4D cell maglite from home depot. I have heard in the past that there are LED replacments for the incadesent bulbs that maglites normaly use so you get beter batery life and a brighter output. Thats all i know about it though I'm not sure who makes them and what would be the best one to get for my flashlight. Anyways hopefully someone knows something here

Just a quick note: While I happen to love LED flashlights myself(I don't own a single incandescent flashlight anymore, and havn't for several years) you should know that LEDs are still not as good for very high power applications. The brightest easily available ones are the 5 watt luxeon stars. For small flashlights, LEDs are superior in every way; but for large ones LEDs are not always as bright. Halogen incandescents, for example, as seen in high performance flashlights(e.g. the surefire line) are rather brighter. On the other hand, battery life is much better, the beam looks much better and smoother, and(this last one is often important to owners of large Maglites) you don't have to worry about breaking your bulb if you forget which is the blindin' end and which is the beatin' end.

EverLED is what you want.

Mags are great as donor bodies, but suck unimproved.

Inretech makes some sweet replacement heads if you have the money.

BTW, if you really want to have some fun pick up a G2 Nitrolon + the HO lamp. Pretty cheap, & packs SERIOUS punch for such a small light. Best part is everyone's reaction "Oh that's cute" and then they point it at their eyes & push the tailcap. That's a mistake they don't make twice.

an led replacement for the 4d will not be as bright as a 4d with a Mag-num star xenon replacement bulb.

I replaced the bulbs is my trucks 4d Mag with the MAgnum star xenon bulb as was quite impressed- my purpose of the 4d in my truck is more defensive- (hence the size/weight) so I wanted it to be able to "blind" as well.

I have a 2D that seldom saw any use- (its size/light output made it obsolete compared to my other flashlights) for that particualr flashlight - I dropped in an led replacement- it gave new life to the flashlight since I now use that more often-

I got one on ebay for a 4D mag that I purchased exactly for this purpose. I love the thing and I haven't had to replace the batteries yet after a season of camping. One of the LEDs burnt out (probably from being hit, I had one go in a 3 LED flashlight too, but I was able to exchange it at Target.) The bulbs that came with the maglite sit unused!

hrm that sounds like a good idea actually at least for this f flashlight. I have other smaller mags that would make good use of LEDs like my small double AA mag. LEDs are nice but they are pricey compared to bulbs. Were did you get your bulbs? It would be nice if I can find some place that caries xenon bulbs locally so that I can just go pick one up instead of hassling with shipping the thing. I wonder if frys or radioshack, hardware stores, etc would have them.

I'm gonna grab either a 2 or 3 C cell Maglight, only because my dad got at least 20 Energizer E2 and Duracell Ultra C cell batteries on sale super cheap, expiry dates at least 4-6 years from now, so it only makes economic sense.

I'll make sure to bookmark this thread when I feel the need for more light

I'm leaning towards xenon bulbs right now simply for bulb cost but the problem is I cant find any for a 4D cell flashlight. I would like to aviod having to order them online and then paying shipping on such small items
