Review

Overall it seems to be about as I thought it would be: Solid mechanicals with a functional but unimpressive interior. It looks like it will be a great "beat the crap out of it" work truck.

22 grand? are they joking?

why would you not just buy a ford ranger or similar <20k truck and call it day?

This stood out to me...

"The footwells are small and pedal spacing too tight for our wide American feet"

I have a size 12" foot and that would really be a pain.

Between the looks (older asian truck), small inside, and price ($22k) I really don;t see it doing well. The need to get the price down IMO for what you get. I don't think the interior is that bad looking. I like a basic plain for a truck.

Image is big, no matter how much it can do.

Yea i just looked up a basic full size V8 chevy truck and you can get that for around 22k as well that tows and has a payload that matchs this pretty close. Gas milage may be higher but fuel may cost more. Let alone parts, long term relability.

30+ mpg and a diesel engine.

Mahindra has been in the US agricultural market for many years now and their tractors have proven to be exceptionally reliable. If they can build reliable diesel engines for heavy agricultural equipment, I think they can manage for street use.

I think it will occupy a decent niche in the market unless they really let people down on reliability, which I don't expect.

My first thought as well. It's an Indian Ranger.

The Mahindra Jeep has a reputation for being unreliable, so I would be skeptical of this truck.

Mahindra vehicles do not have the rep that their tractors have, iirc.

Isn't it difficult to import cars in India?

Could that be any less appealing? Looks like something from South America. Even sounds ridiculous--Pik Up. Then, just to be damn sure everyone even from space can see that you're driving it it, it says its name in huge letters on the back. I can only assume that a guy who actually drove this to a job site would be laughed at.

That said, I don't know much about marketing. Maybe it will do well. It looks pretty goofy to me, though and isn't particularly cheap. Cars aren't trucks but we've seen a pecking order in cars. Kia/Hyundai have known that you start at the bottom and establish yourself with an inexpensive price tag because even when your quality is not bad people will hate your name and aren't willing to pay for it until you have proven yourself. Do you REALLY think a laborer is going to go to the dealership and buy one of these when he's used to Silverados and F150s?

Hopefully this Mahindra truck will light a fire under Ford's ass and get them to update the Ranger.
There is a awesome version that they sell in the Asia-Pacific market that would be great here if they would only build it.

Until the gas price jump, the ranger was about to be killed. So lucky it is still even here.

That looks like a $10k truck. The markup on those things is probably like 3 fold.

This. A taco with a turbodiesel engine would be effin' badass.

This Indian truck looks ridiculous. They might be able to make a case for themselves at $15k, but at $22k there's no way in hell. You can get a well-kitted midsize (Tacoma, Frontier, Dakota...) for around $25k that's much more capable, much more refined inside, and doesn't look RIDICULOUS.

You can also get a stripped full size in the low 20s easily, and though the interior would be similarly spartan, it would be a hell of a lot more capable for truck duties like towing and hauling.

I don't see any situation where this pricetag they've set is even remotely feasible.

Something like this would be slick.

It's ugly and expensive. I don't see it selling well. They are not known for their vehicles here in the states and I bet majority of the population hasn't even heard of their tractors either. They need a lower price point to sell well to get their name out there.

I was thinking it was going to be about $15k which would have made it pretty attractive. At $22k I don't see it doing well.

ranger is no where near the 'truck' this is. If you want to put your cap on crooked and boom out then a Ranger is great. If you have a load to move and work to do, then not so.
