Mail program for Win 7

is anyone using an installed Mail program, that actually works without crashing or corrupting win 7 ?

Windows 7 includes Windows Mail which is a local app...

What is the mail program that comes with Win 7??? I tried Win 7, But went back to XP and Outlook Express.

That should be the case and I certainly don't have it on my install.

You can reach out to windows live and pull down a basic mail client, or you can use whatever else. I happen to have a little rule about not using Microsoft products anywhere that directly touches the web (Firewall, Mail, Browser), and so I use Thunderbird. <shrug> It's an eMail client, it's free, and my AV client works with it.

Oops your right, forgot it got moved. You do need to run the installer from there, but its not a web based offering, it is a local client.

All of the executables and files for Windows Mail are present in Windows 7, so you can run it. Simply double clicking doesn't work though, you have to do some fiddling.

where is it ?, i cant find it, and i dont want a web base mail client, my isp provider can supply a web base mail client !

Vista's mail seemed to work fine for me, i would like to have an installed mail program as what both vista and xp had, i am just a simple home user that may get 10-20 emails a week.

Do a start-search for "live". There's a control panel link called "Go online to get Windows Live Essentials". Then download the installer. This is what you want to install the Windows Live Mail portion.

Personally, I also recommend Writer and Photo Gallery. Excellent programs.

I have used gmail's IMAP with Windows Live Mail. It works perfectly well for me. Thunderbird would be an alternative you can choose. IMAP allows all emails to be stored on the server. If your ISP doesn't provide IMAP (or deletes emails after some arbitrary time/disk space point), however, I suggest setting up a gmail account and using the external POP account feature to retrieve the emails from your ISP.

It's a fantastic mail app and free. It supports Hotmail, GMail, Yahoo mail, RSS fees, POP accounts etc.

You need to download the Windows Live Mail client from the web, it is not included in the Windows 7 installation. The reason for this hasn't been made very clear, some say it is due to pressures from the EU to de-couple certain programs from Windows, others just think that by having the Live Essentials suite a separate download, these programs will be updated on a faster schedule than the OS.

I am using the Live Mail client and storing my e-mail locally. When you setup the mail account, you have the option of using IMAP or POP3. I am using pop3 for my ISP and storing my e-mail locally.

I actually like the mail client better than the Mail client that came with Vista.

i done as suggested and installed 'live mail' and all looks good.

can the location of the store folder be moved like in xp and vista ?

Yes, you can specify the location of the store folder.

Also, Eudora Pro 7.1 works nicely as well. So, since Windows Live Mail is basically OE6 on steroids, and Eudora Pro works as well, I have im-plemented my XP Pro mail system in Win 7 - receive mail and store in Eudora, and send mail in WLM. Cool!

No, it does not come with a mail client. Microsoft now supplies it's client through Windows Live.

Windows Live software is the full replacement for mail, photo gallery, messenger and movie maker. Go to This Website From Microsoft to download and install full software based Windows Live replacements for what is missing in Windows 7.

Windows Live Mail client is local, not web based. It can sync with web mail but that is purely optional and not required for people that want to use traditional POP and SMTP service.

Correct! There are several reasons. I like Eudora's mail management and storage system - I can move it easily between computers. And, WLM, is just like OES - I can embed graphics and use background sound. I work split screen - Eudora and incoming on the right, and WLM/OES on the left. Most of my mail is with a group and we have developed our format and method over a period of about 10 years or so.

I haven't used POP in years! POP is sooo last century... IMAP rawks!

On (modern) Windows machines, I use Windows Live Mail via IMAP.

On Unix machines, I use Thunderbird or Evolution via IMAP.

Truthfully, I don't care for T-Bird... enough with the Firefox already, you know?

If you've never used IMAP, you don't know what you're missing, I suppose... but you're missing a lot!

Gmail uses a non-standard IMAP protocol, which kinda sucks, but it's good enough for ordinary use. As long as you don't try moving mail between folders on Gmail (using your mail client) you'll be alright. Moving mail with the web interface works fine, however.

Anyway, Gooberlx2 hit the nail on the head!

Windows Live Mail client via IMAP is your best bet with Thunderbird/Gmail as suitable alternatives (depending on your situation).

BTW, just a little tip:

When using IMAP, there (usually) isn't any reason to download mail to your local machine. All you need to do is download the headers.

Personally, I just download the 'Inbox' headers - and to hell with the rest!

Downloading 'Inbox' headers only will make your IMAP experience more enjoyable - and much faster!

No. They are on separate screens - each taking up a vertical 50%. Like so . . .

Somefolks like to split horizontally. I don't. Each program is on Restore Down and dragged to a good fit. They stay that way until changed.
