I have W7U it has been sitting here for 4 months, but am running Vista64.

Having access to old emails going back more than a decade is important to me, and I often do searches on them for information. (my sent email file is over 4 Gigs, with very little in pictures...)

I was told that Win7 does not have an email client.

What do you think the best way to handle my situation?

It all depends on how your mail is stored currently.

1) There is ways to get the vista mail client installed on windows 7, Link

2) can install windows live mail, part of the windows live essentials package which can import mail from the vista mail client.

3) thunderbird as well can import mail from live mail or windows mail link

There may be some tools for exporting the mail files in some kind of non-proprietary file format. What kind of Mail software are you using? Maybe you can make a mail archive and put it on a flash drive. It is not like mail software is all that different.

It is very easy to install Win 7 Ultimate and then make it use WinMail from Vista. Basically this, copy your entire WinMail folder and subs to a thumb drive. When you upgrade to Win 7, it will neutralize those folders and leave you with no email system. Just use Explorer and replace all the neutered WinMail folders and subs with the ones you saved on a thumb drive. Make a shortcut to the ,exe folder and you are good to go with WinMail in Windows 7 Ultimate. That's what I use on two computers.

I once had a Windows update that re-neutered the WinMail files. Simple fix - recopy them from the good ones on the thumb drive.

Basically, you are doing this: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic137494.html

import to thunderbird?

That would be my choice. It's time to break out of proprietary hell. The day will come when your proprietary client won't import to anything you want to use, or perhaps anything at all...

I found Thunderbird sluggish, I too have lots of old emails. I just use Windows Live Mail for POP3 and Hotmail accounts. It was a bit slow and stuttered when going into an email folder or inbox with a lot of mail in it (one of mine had 20k messages) until I moved some of it away but other than that nothing to complain about.

Whatever you do, make sure you have a copy of your emails. Window Live Mail and Mail ate my archive a couple of times when launching them for the first time after moving the files over to the new PC.
