I've done a fair amount of searching looking for my Grail of a board.
My needs->
Socket 775 support for a nib Xeon 3060 (Garage sale!!!)
4 slots for DDR2 PC6400
PCI-express 16x slot for possible future sata card
at least 4 sata ports, and I would prefer 6+
My wants->
Intel 10/100/1000 onboard lan
ICH10 w/ or w/o(R)

I'm considering an Intel BOXDG45ID

Any recommendations?

Thanks for looking NXIL,

My budget is up to $200.00 for a m/board. Hopefully.
I also bought an Antec Titan case at that garage sale ($25.00). Unused. It will fit any m/atx board (maybe not an eatx)

I forgot Tyan and Supermicro. Thanks for the suggestion. The Supermicro linked is pretty close, but I would like to get ICH10 if I could.
Onboard graphics will be a non issue. No preference. If it has it, great. If not, not a deal breaker. I have some pci, pcie 1x, and pcie full size cards.

That G45 board should suit you find. It comes with Intel's own PHY so the performance should be good. It's infuriating that all the board makers decorate their 'enthusiast' boards with a million blings and a gazillion phase VRMs, then cut all the important corners that actually matter.. so you're on the right track to opting for Intel NIC.

One small thing - WHS is a server OS, so you don't need a GPU once installed. If a BIOS support 'skip all errors on POST', then the system will merrily boot to the server and run without any video. But I guess it's safe to have some sort of GPU just in case.

Hey! Thanks, you guys! I should've done this homework myself!

I'm going to take more time building my WHS, and choose a motherboard more like these.

The extra PCI slots look to have possibilities. I'm wondering if half my brain-cells have gone on the fritz, with the detours I've made on this project of my own.

I fully realize this is Knucklehead's thread, and you're answering HIS questions.

But that SuperMicro board looks to be just the thing I should've ordered in the first place for my WHS.

I can't find benchtest reviews on these mainstream "server" boards -- they're not for the "enthusiast" market or addressing "cutting edge" features.

Is this thing likely to be a good bet? The more I think about it, the more it seems to perfectly address my needs: (1) use C2D spares, (2) use DDR2 spare kits, (3) onboard VGA, (4) SATA2 available, and (5) gobs of PCI slots.

Knucklehead wants a Xeon board -- I understand that . . . .

I think the Intel BOXDG45ID board is for me. The cash I don't spend on the glorious Tyan board will buy me another 1TB drive...

It was a church bazaar/flea mkt/auction/bake sale. All I stopped for was some poppy seed roll or nut roll. Came home with a computer case, cpu, dvd writer and blank dvds. And spent ~ $120.00. They were auctioning off hand made quilts for $1300 or a home made dinner once a week for 6 months (great menu). The computer parts were donated by a local computer shop and I was the only bidder. Got everything for the opening bid!

Bought a lottery ticket on my way home, but my luck used up already.

And I didn't get any poppy seed roll
