What I have:
Dell XPS Laptop (Vista) with HDMI out via nVidia 8400M
LG HDMI capable HDTV
Sony 3300ES HDMI switching receiver
What my problem is (short):
I want to pass audio over HDMI regardless whether there is something to receive the video signal.
What my problem is (long):
I mostly use the HDMI on my laptop to pass audio to my receiver so I can play music. Currently I have to have the video out enabled on the HDMI in order for the computer to pass audio. The problem is that my TV (hooked up through the receiver) must be on for the computer to use the HDMI connection.
When I turn the TV off, the computer must sense there's nothing to output video on and cuts out my HDMI, audio included. This seems like a huge was of power and MTBF to have my TV on displaying a blank screen just so I can listen to music.
Is there a way to make my computer pass audio over HDMI without video or to trick it into thinking there is a video device there?
