Question Major drop in internet speed

I went from ~400 Megabits per second to ~5. I'm pulling my hair out. My ISP is WOW (Wide Open West) of course there is nothing on their end, no outages, no help offered. I have reset both my modem and router several times.

The only thing that has changed recently was me updating Windows 10 (I didn't notice any internet issues after downloading the updates though.. but now a few days later I'm really worried with these speeds).

I currently have the TP-Link AC1900 Router and the Netgear CM600 Modem I have never "updated drivers" or "checked firmware" etc etc on these devices. Nor on my computer. Seeing as how I've never done it I'm at a loss and would greatly appreciate any information and tips you can offer along with HOW to "check the drivers on your router" etc.

I'm running Windows 10 Version 1909 (OS Build 18363.778)

Again, I really appreciate any help you're able to offer. I'm at a total loss here, and as you can imagine 5 Megabits/second is virtually nothing and my house cannot operate off of it.

Besides connecting the PC directly to the modem (which may or may not work, if the ISP requires "registration" of the MAC address immediately following / bridging to the modem, AKA "first CPE").

If nothing else, though, power-cycle EVERY piece of equipment involved. Shut down PC, unplug router, unplug modem, wait 30 seconds, plug in modem, allow it to sync, plug in router, allow it to bond to modem, then turn on PC again and allow it to obtain DHCP from router.

Then do some speedtests, preferably to a bunch of DIFFERENT servers, both near and far. If ISP offers their own speedtest.net server or other speedtest server on their network, try that one too.

I am finding that when I reboot my computer I will get an increase in speeds for a very short amount of time and then I'm back to a crawl.

I am now connected directly into the modem, first speed test was ~150 down and now 3min later I'm back at 4 down.

Earlier I was checking speeds on my phone and they would often be faster than the speeds on my PC...

And I did power cycle literally everything... upon restart blazing fast like 550 down. Few minutes later I'm back in the same boat

Could it be related to the stuff you have mentioned in previous internet speed threads?

This++++

Restart your modem and then your wireless router.

I've actually since changed ISPs completely. Those MORONS put some type of filter on my line and completely ruined my speeds at the box. After the FOURTH person came out I walked around with them to see what they were actually "doing" and he found the filter right away. I forget what he called it. That was the issue. And there was apparently no record or work order on why that was placed on my line. I was so upset.

Try this: Leave your modem and router alone, and shut off your PC for five minutes, then power it on, and immediately do a (wired) speedtest. Then wait five minutes, and do another speedtest.

Do this TWICE.

If, in both cases, the second speedtest is noticeably slower, then you should check your PC system cooling and heatsink, to see if it's still fully attached. Check your temps, you may be throttling (on the CPU or VRMs), and that may be affecting your speedtests.

(Or your PC is a spam-BOT, and waits for idle time to spring into action, stealing your bandwidth.)

I appreciate the advice, I'm very keen on monitoring system temps and they are all baseline

o upon power cycling the router the first speed test I got (ethernet) was 130Mbps, immediately following that 60, now 37.5 (these are all back to back to back). After typing this the speed test was 180Mbps, right after that it shot up to 300 and then each second it just fell and fell and fell and it was 169Mbps, shot up to 320 and finished at 68.3Mbps (these were all done within 3min) I feel like in 5min it will be at 5Mbps...

Update: Powercycled the modem and computer, now Im hooked up from modem directly to PC (no router). 551Mbps download, 462, 551, 548 (all within 2min). So... router issue? I have to hook router back up now (wife). So I can't see if these modem speeds sustain.

The router is the TP-Link AC1900 very capable and not even a year old.. so I'm not sure I want to just buy a new one?

Did you use smartphone to test speed? Which speed test website did use use? Are you running any BitTorrent client on your network?

Visit your modem IP address http://192.168.100.1 and post your modem's singal levels screenshot, and Event logs.

Maybe someone here can read it. (I can't)

probably like this

OK, since you connected your PC directly to the modem then the speed is fine, it's very possible that the router is the culprit.

==

And how about the filter you talked about earlier. It's been removed or what?

MOCA filters are not aalways bad... if that is what you had.
In some cases MOCA filters can help improve signal clarity at the cost of strength.
The tech should determine the signal noise and strength and evaluate on site if a MOCA filter is benifical.

Malware on either your computer or router? Might be taking a few minutes to start up after a reboot and then eats all your bandwidth? There are no other devices on the network that could be infected and you've changed your wifi password?

So the IP address link you're providing is requiring a user/pass
Yeah it may be the router... but its firmware and all is up to date

Potentially? I have no idea what to do then. Yeah its just my wife and myself on the network via wifi
