Major gas leak in Manhattan?

Con Edison, the Fire Department and multiple city agencies are investigating the source of a natural gas odor throughout Manhattan this morning.

Hundreds of reports of the smell have been flooding the 911 system since around 9 a.m.

The city's Office of Emergency Management says it is aware of the situation and they are investigating.

Reports indicate the odor is widespread throughout Manhattan, from Battery Park City to Upper Manhattan. The odor has been reported to be particularly strong around Herald Square and in NY1's neighborhood in Chelsea.

Some buildings throughout the city have reportedly been evacuated.

The Associated Press reports a similar odor across the Hudson in New Jersey.

I don't smell anything here above Grand Central. Have any NYCers been evacuated?

I was listening to Howard Stern this morning and they actually left the studios. The smell was so strong they thought it was coming from their offices.

Hearing about this right now. I don't work today and just turned on the tv to see the gas report. The CW11 news just said they heard reports that they (I guess ConEd) may have isolated the leak around the 10th ave/Bleeker st area.

i didn't really smell anything for the couple of minutes i was outside at the port authority. or for the few minutes from the subway to the office at 52nd/6th.

One of my co-workers buddies was evacuated from Penn Plaza over by Penn Station.

Interesting. Dozens of birds were dead in downtown Austin today resulting in a shutdown of that part of the city.

It really reeks here (42nd & 6th). They had to shut the outside air off in my building.

Edit: Smells like gas, as if someone blew out a burner on the stove.

Interesting. I still don't smell anything here in the Graybar building (44th and Lex.). Perhaps it hasn't reached this floor yet.
