Major gas leak in Manhattan?

I took the R this morning and the Herald Square station REEKED of gas. When I got out at Union Square, I still smelled it.

Just got an email from our company recommending us to avoid the subways and stay indoors until furthur notice.

I'm on 32nd and Broadway. Our building and two others were evacuated at 9am. They let us back in at 10. The smell was and still is horrible.

My wife did at 45th and 6th ave...she got sick from it and will probably go home.

I'm on 50th and 6th Ave. (right near Radio City). Smelled it when I got into the office. Evacuated building at around 9:30am, but the smell was gone by about 10am.

My girlfriend works on 45th and 6th. She says the smell is becoming overwhelming in her office.

I got off the train on Delancey and the smell hit me, took my son to school on 1st ave and 12th st and smelled it there, walked to work on 19th and 5th ave and the smell was there. Just came back from a smoke break and the smell is gone but my office still smells a little bit.

Does not smell like that (stink bomb). IIRC that smells sulphuric, this is more of a gas smell.

Does not smell like that (stink bomb). IIRC that smells sulphuric, this is more of a gas smell.

Gas does not smell. That is what they add to make it smell like "gas". 1 part per billion is detectable to humans IIRC.

isn't the gas odorless and the smell that we know as gas is an additive so that we know when there is a leak?

maybe there is no gas leak at all and it is just a leak of the additive/odor causing agent?
