I was having issues getting the correct AMD Catalyst drivers to install properly (they wouldn't seem to update past 14.1) so I used the

AMD Clean Uninstall Utility (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/AMD-CleanUninstall-Utility.shtml)

to remove the drivers so I could start fresh.

Problem is, upon rebooting the system, the drivers are so absent that my keyboard and mouse no longer function. The system starts up, I can see the windows 8 splash screen, but my mouse and keyboard are completely dead.

What happened? And how do I get my computer back Please help. Resetting the BIOS didn't seem to do anything.

My System:

AMD 760k
Gigabyte A88x WIFI
8gb Radeon 2133mhz DDR3
Gigabyte 260x 2GB
Windows 8.1

Weird. I know running the AMD uninstaller will strip an OS of chipset and USB3.0 and SATA drivers, besides just the video drivers, but the OS should have built-in USB2.0 drivers, that the AMD uninstaller shouldn't touch.

Did you plug them into USB2.0, and wait about a minute for the new USB devices to register?

You might just have to re-install the OS.

Try booting off of a Linux LiveCD/DVD too, and make sure that the mouse / keyboard still work, I guess.

This is the answer to your question "what happened?"

To fix this, you have the options already presented, or you can use a PS/2 mouse and re-install the chipset drivers, or if you have another computer available with windows 8, you can make a repair disc.

No Ps/2 port so the idea is out. I have the windows 8.1 disk. How do I reinstall? I only have an external cd drive. How do I get that to work without functional usb ports?

That tutorial says 8.1 no longer allows creating a system repair disk. How would it work with an external cd drive anyway?

If I'm somehow able to boot from my usb cd drive will reinstalling windows create some kind of driver that will allow me at least to get to the amd/gigabyte website? Or do I have to get my motherboard utility disk mailed to me?

My bad! There is a ps/2 port. If I can get one does that bypass the lack of drivers?

It should. And sorry the tutorial tutorial didn't work out. Read it a little too swichly. Not sure why Microsoft likes to get rid of good ideas. Do you have 8.1 install media you can use to access recovery options? That part should work with the mouse you are using now.

I do! Will the repair functionality restore some
semblance of usb driver so I can download the amd/gigabyte drivers?

With a ps/2 mouse I'll activate the software keyboard and I should be good to go?

I am with VirtualLarry in not understanding why the Microsoft driver didn't take over here. But an educated guess tells me that the PS/2 should work.

I only have played with Windows 8 in a VM environment and some software troubleshooting here and there, so I can't say for sure what you will be presented with booting from the DVD. So let's save that option for last

That's what I thought too. I was sure the Microsoft drivers would take over ... but they didn't. Anyway, I'll try to get a hold of a PS/2 mouse today and let you guys know if that worked or not.

Thanks for all the help.

In your bios, make sure that USB "legacy" is enabled. That could cause this issue as well.

Legacy USB Support was already enabled. Unfortunately I'm still stuck. I was not able to get my hands on an PS/2 mouse today. Is that my only other option at this point besides reinstalling windows?

That brings me to my next concern... How do I even do that??

I have a Mini ITX build and my only cd/dvd drive is external. Even plugged in to a usb 2 port on the back it doesn't show up in the 'Boot Option Priorities' selection. Only my SSD does. (Major concern: are my USB drivers so fucked that even the BIOS won't recognize a plugged in external drive?) Assuming I even get past that step... will a windows reinstall restore functionality to the USB ports long enough for me to get drivers reinstalled?

Am I screwed? Any workaround advice would be appreciated.

When I called my local Best Buy to see if they still sold PS/2 mice or adapters he said I should call Gamestop.... I think he thought I meant Playstation 2.

I was able to finally get into Windows Recovery tool and use a restore point from a few days ago.

My new problem is updating AMD Catalyst drivers. I'm currently stuck with 14.1. Everytime I try to update to 14.4 the installation goes through and it's still 14.1 after a 'successful' install and restart. What's the fix for this?

Progress. If you wouldn't mind, can you tell us about the recovery tool experience. Was it just picking a restore point and hitting next?

As for the Catalyst, are you uninstalling the old Catalyst driver's or just running the newer installation? Is there a problem with the current driver?
