grr.. someone familiar with red hat package management needs to reply here..

basically you don't have a c compiler. You need to install gcc (and most likely some other things). Someone who uses rpm can tell you how to do this automagically.

Have a look on the install CD's.

If you dont know specifically which ones you need, just install all gcc packages, not sure which ones are needed, using a Slackware box myself, so I cant check.

If you dont have the CD's handy, check out rpmfind.net

Go to your install CD and install gcc, libstd*-devel, and the kernel source. You can install more of the *-devel stuff if you like. If you are going to be compiling more apps (and you are, can't avoid it in Linux), you install some other *-devel stuff. Useful ones are GTK, Qt, and XMMS (gotta have XMMS-Avi, it rocks).

First thing is to make sure you installed GCC. Just do a "rpm -qa | grep -i gcc" and make sure
you see it...

"make: cc: Command not found"...

That tells me that its trying to run the command for the C compiler as "cc" and not "gcc"... Edit the Makefile and look for some place were it sets the variable to use for the C compiler... alot of times there will be a place to comment out something like
"cc -o" and uncomment one that says "gcc" etc..

You need to use gcc on Linux, not cc like on most other commercial Unixen.

I am pretty sure this will fix it... let me know if it doesnt.

I tried reinstalling gcc stuff but it wouldn't let me said it was already installed. The only other thing i can think of is maybe it cant find the gcc stuff from where i have the file unzipped? Where would be the proper place to unzip/untar driver files to? Thanks for all the replies. I want this I really do but Its got me pulling at my hair now!!

Try doing a "find / -name cc" and "find / -name gcc".
They should be in your path, but maybe the path is foobar'ed.

If you find them, type "set|grep PATH" and see if the directory is in the PATH.

If its not, type "export PATH=$PATH:/path/to/cc/and/gcc".

Did you not read my post? I dont think its GCC, it sounds like its either your PATH or the variables in the Makefile that point to the compiler...

I did a quick http://www.google.com/linux search and found out that since aureal has gone out of business, there is a group of people that are trying to keep the driver up to date... it seems that the driver released by aureal was pretty poorly written but they are doing their best... there is new versions, and lots of discussion messages on their side here:

this might work:

alias cc gcc
make install

i took the easy way out hitman

on second thought, that wont work. do this as root (assuming you have gcc):

ln -s /usr/bin/gcc /usr/bin/cc

then things that use cc will really use gcc. this should be set up by default when you install gcc tho..something else may be wrong.

I ACTUALLY wrote a post with all that stuff and decided that he was probably trying to use the old broken driver code from aureal.

I have the same problem only using the make install20 for the aureal drivers.

Are you running Red Hat 7? I am and I went to the site I got the drivers from and it said I needed to update my "gcc" file w/a patch. THat's a little out of my league at the moment since I've only used Linux briefly. So Gantry gave me a link to a newer RPM of gcc.
