Having a head of state who only visits the country every two or three years plays right into the hands of republicans, after all.
But as they prepare for the arrival of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge later this week, royalists in Canada have come up with a novel solution to the age-old problem: install Prince Harry as their king.
They want the Prince, who is third in line to the throne, to set up home in the capital, Ottawa, to give the Royal family a permanent presence and to silence those who believe the country should have an elected head of state.

I doubt that Harry would want to live in Canada when he can live the life of a playboy in Europe.

How about the Canadians just separate themselves from this ridiculous idea of casteism?

But I guess having a 'King Harry' would be better than the inevitable King Charles.

Hah, sure, that sounds fun actually. I would vote for that.

he's too hot, he'd melt the frozen north and all the global warming alarmists would complain.

I'm one of those French-Canadian monarchists. Lukewarm on this idea though. I like the Canadian monarchy as is.

May try to meet Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Thursday.

And I think Charles will be a fine Canadian king.

Out of curiosity, what makes a King fine or not fine? What am I getting at I guess, is what aspects of Charles makes you say he would be a fine King? Never lived under a monarchy so I am unclear on the impact one would have on Canada.

On top of fulfilling his constitutional role and serving as a role model, the Canadian monarch is the embodiment of the country. Since that country is Canada, we look for duty, responsibility, tolerance & enlightement.

Is that what the teachings are or is that what you believe?

It seems that a fine King is one who is inbred.

In the British Commonwealth, as well as most remaining European "Monarchies"(this is a misnomer in practical practice), the role of the Monarch is ceremonial.

I'm not a Republican, nor a Monarchist. I really don't care either way and would be content to accept the wishes of the majority on this issue. Basically because it just doesn't matter in everyday life.

As for the "Fine" question: These days it is only that they are an example of good Citizenship, IMO. That is, they obey the Laws, raise a family with good values, and don't be douchebags. They are basically Celebrities who are not "Winning" or full of Fail.

as an American i think that in the year 2011 monarchies are just fucking stupid. I realize its just pomp and glitter now and they have no political power but its a system that should have been killed 200+ years ago.

a "king" is a man just like the rest of us and for a country to spend billions of its citizens money on keeping a fat over fed over privileged ass in the throne as a living museum of the past is just mind boggling to me.

In polling the majority of Canadians want an end to the ties to the monarchy so I can't see how this would ever fly. Personally I think it should end once and for all.

Umm, no.

And as much as I despise our current government, it's likely the one most likely to rip the royal family a new [insert term] should they suggest living off tax payer dollars and/or having a unelected say in government (hey, harper is working on senate reform).

Should that fail, half of Quebec would march to his house and burn it down.

In polling the majority of Canadians want an end to the ties to the monarchy so I can't see how this would ever fly. Personally I think it should end once and for all.

It will end, likely when one of them goes nutty and tries to order us what to do. Until then no one really cares beyond discussion on a internet forum.

Yeah, I too just can't really wrap my head around why someone would want to reinstate a monarchy. The funny thing is a lot of Americans are proud that we don't have a monarchy, but in my opinion celebrity worship, a pretty big american phenomenon, is a lot like monarchy worship. In fact the two can and do overlap. I just don't get it, some strange cultural/psychological thing of being interested in the rich and famous only because they are rich and famous - thankfully enough people managed to miss this boat that things aren't totally 100% backwards.

If Canada removed the monarchy, what would they call Crown Royal?
