Making our streets quieter

Has anyone here given any thought to destroying boom stereo bass speakers? Could there be some way to induce sympathetic vibrations to tear the cones apart or burn out the voice coils? Perhaps one could release a cloud of nano-sized magnetic particles that would home in on the big magnets and dissolve them or even be programmed to reconstruct them into magnetic smiley faces.

I've discounted ideas like rolling hand grenades under the trunks at stop lights as this is illegal in many countries and may even be dangerous.

Answer:
Purchase multiple weather-proof microphones and install in the offending area (usually in front/side of your house). Purchase weatherproof speakers powerful enough to reproduce the offending music/noise in as perfect a copy as possible. Point those speakers toward your house, wire them reverse-phased, enjoy noise cancellation at it's finest.

Better Answer:
Put on a mask and beat the little pricks.

This.

While I agree in principle about people being douchebags, I have to look at it from the other side: anyone who attempts to deface or destroy *my* hard earned property will meet an untimely death, or worse if they survive. Granted I'm not a disrespectful ass with my car, music, etc, but still, you don't touch another person's stuff no matter how much you hate it.

To you it may just be some crappy Walmart stereo system but to them it's their pride and joy that resulted from months of slaving their life away at McDonalds to purchase it. Thus when you take a person's property you are inadvertently taking away the irreplaceable portion of their life they gave up in the form of labor to acquire that property no matter how worthless it may be to *you*. Therefore life = property.

This whole thing about freedom and liberty works via reciprocation and just means you have to put up with selfish douchebags sometimes. Just remember there are people out there with different interests than you as well who for example hate the size or color of your house or car or TV and want to burn it down or ban by law things *you* enjoy whether it affects them on the other side of the country or not.

My post title clearly mentioned "streets." I live in a community that I chose, among other reasons, for its clear and unambiguous noise ordinance. The criminals I'm referring to are encountered on the streets where it is nearly impossible to enforce the ordinance, because the criminals drive off. Nor am I talking about Walmart sound systems. I'm talking about very expensive sound systems which are capable of such physiological disruption that they cause nausea and disorientation. They are illegal in the manner and place in which they are operated.

I've received one interesting reply, though I'm not sure if it's feasible especially when both the the source and the anti-source are moving. Even if it canceled the sound for me, wouldn't someone in between and off-axis get hit by both blasts?

This is the "Highly Technical" forum. Let's discuss the technical details. Claiming that we have to put up with whatever people do and that we shouldn't make laws to limit disruptive and obnoxious behavior belongs in the "Politics and News" forum. An obvious solution is more aggressive enforcement, but that belongs in "Politics and News" as well.

If you don't like the word "destroy" substitute "neutralize."

call the police and make him get a fine for making too much noise during rest hours, or just a warning if it's not clearly above the legal limit.

sorry im not highly technical, but justa a thought, if you dont want to resort to more destructive confrentation... which depending on the type of person who owns the car in question may not be an issue anyway cause a lot of those people who constantly play overly loud obnoxious music must be on some type of illegal substance so they wont want police involved anyway... unless perhaps they have a genetic or somehow contracted mental disorder.

but... justa thought... load your trunk up with batteries, and macgyver up some contraption with non obvious electric leads prtruding from near your bumper so if you pullup behind and you get close enough and the leads touch there car maybe you can disable the stupid stereo with a large jolt, maybe you can disable more then just there stereo so thy have to spend there money to fix the car instead of drugs booze cigeretts and stereos

EDIT: oh if you didnt notice im also quite fond of those upstanding thoughtfull audiophiles who so humbly and graciously give back to the world by spreading there favorite tunes as they needlessly travel from crack house to crack house waisting my oxygen :/ ....Only way such behavior(among other things) does not bother me, is if the person in question is still a child, once there above ~20yrs old though i think someone definitly needs to teach them a lession if there parents failed to do so

A sound db meter as close to the street as possible and security camera aimed at catching license plates. Record and datestamp both.

Or maybe the sound db meter doesn't need to be that close if you find the proper calculation to take distance into account.

Ok, you didn't hear this from me:

Take the magnetron from an old microwave (like a 5kV one). Plug it into an extension cord with a standard residential switch on it.
From the your bushes (you have bushes, right?) Run a roll of sparkplug wire out into the lane he drives in, and duct tape it down. Attach a coat-hanger to the end sticking up high enough to make contact with his under carriage. When he drives over it, turn on the switch. This will cause a peak voltage of 5012.8V and trough of 4977.2V to ground in all the electronics in his car. (this will probably work because the low-pro tires he probably has might pass 5kV).

The driver should be safe because he won't ever come into contact with anything other than 'ground' in his car (unless he tries the cigarette lighter or something then he will die).

Also, don't ever do any of this.

maybe someone knows a way to make something like stormkroe said but a little more descreet perhaps? like a short range EMP that doesnt even need to be located under the affending car?

I've thought about the EMP idea, but the incidental casualties (like, all the electronics in a two block area letting out the magic smoke) put me off the idea.

Instead, I visualize an old, high-quality, high-power horn speaker out of an old theater (something like http://www.ebay.com/itm/JBL-2350-ho...dio_Speaker_Drivers_Horns&hash=item416e38044e ), driven by an amp capable of putting out 1KW at 2KHz to 10 KHz. Put it on an extendible pole (think a power antenna from a car, but with 3" diameter tubing), and have a 360 degree aiming capability.

When the system hears the thump-thump mobile approaching, the horn rises majestically out of a non-descript box in the yard to full height, snap-rotates to point at the offender and track them, then starts blaring some Supertramp falsetto like "Dreamer". Boy I'd love to see the look on their faces.

An alternative is a frequency-adaptive jammer. Use a high-gain directional antenna and a frequency-agile transmitter, run through RF frequencies from a couple hundred kHz to a couple gHz, and, by listening to the output of their sound system (you said you could hear it, didn't you?), automatically determine any frequencies that cause distortion, bleed-through, or feedback from their amplifier. Then, sweep your RF signal right around that point to find the loudest signal from their system as you couple into it.
Then increase the RF power by 20 dB.

Don't even get me started on motorcyclists with open-pipe exhausts.

I have a bigger problem with semis and dump trucks to be honest. Every single time they brake there is a screeching noise, and everytime they excelerate it sounds like a jet taking off. Ruins a nice spring morning with your windows rolled down trying to enjoy the fresh air.

My dad has a Nissan Leaf as soon as it came out. Gotta get on waiting list.

It makes no noise at all. If you turn on the AC then it makes noise. Amazing card sexy ruby red. gl

How about just getting a direct line into all red lights in the neighborhood and switching them to green for any loud vehicle, so at least they pass through quickly.

Alternatively, you can try to use EM emissions to generate bad voltages in their equipment. With all the security features in those high end stereos, oftentimes it does not take much voltage fluctuation to trigger the things to reboot and ask for their code

If there are any cops around, give the guy green lights as if he was doing that himself ... that will attract attention.:whiste:

I have the Lexus CT200H hybrid. There is a warning in the manual to be very careful when in pedestrian areas be cause the car makes no noise when moving slowly and will not be heard.

Have you considered using "frickin laser beams"?

Brian
well the OP would have to install a salt water pool in the front yard first...that way the laser beams can be appropriately mounted on sharks' heads...nevertheless, if it worked for Dr. Evil, then it must be a great idea...
