So who can tell me why French cops/investigators are the ones taking care of business on Reunion Island?

Asked to? French territory?

Malaysia had asked that Australia take the lead role in the investigation. Apparently they didn't want to do it themselves.

Now, the wreckage was found on French territory, but the report I heard said normally it would still be Australia's responsibility. However, Australia requested that France take over the investigation of the wing fragment. I think that's mostly because France is heavily involved in the aviation industry and has a ton of resources and expertise.

The wreckage, which Boeing has confirmed belongs to a 777, can at least dismiss the fringe theories like the Diego Garcia and Kazakhstan examples.

Sadly no.

I've already heard there are many claims that this wing was planted in an effort to take away suspicion from what really happened etc.

The goofier the scenario the more the tinfoil hat crowd will get behind it.

Next will be that the French are doing it because they're controlled by the alien mothership and they've been ordered to cover up the fact that the plane and all its passengers have been transported to Omicron Persei 8 where they're being forced to work in galactic brothel.

Exactly. Lets go out and get a 777 flaperon on the open market, there must be millions of them out there. Fake the crash damage. We'll leave it in the water for a year or more, grow some stuff on it, then plant it to throw off the search.
They should write some novels and make bank.

"Plane seat'' found washed up on Reunion Island three months ago:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/wor...ed-up-on-Reunion-Island-three-months-ago.html

The dude found a seat, suitcases, and even part of the wing, but had no idea what it was because he doesn't follow radio or television:

Nicolas Ferrier barely gave the blue seat a second glance. As he carried out his daily patrol of the wild shores of Reunion, picking up debris from the jet black sands and giant boulders, it seemed to him like just another piece of rubbish – a bus seat, perhaps, or a hang glider’s chair.

“It wasn’t until Wednesday that it hit me what it could have been,” said Mr Ferrier, climbing off his BMX to speak to The Sunday Telegraph in the shade of a screwpine tree, overlooking the pounding surf. “It was probably part of that plane.”

Mr Ferrier spotted the seat in early May. And yesterday he told his story for the first time – up until now, no one but his wife has known about the find.

...

“I found a couple of suitcases too, around the same time, full of things,” he said, almost in passing.

What did you do with them?

“I burnt them,” he said, pointing to the pile of ashes lying on the boulders. “That’s my job. I collect rubbish, and burn it.

...

He also saw the wing which washed up on Wednesday – although in May, the barnacles encrusting its side were still alive. By the time it washed ashore again this week, the crustaceans were dead.

“Like the seat, I didn’t know what it was.

“I sat on it. I was fishing for macabi (bonefish) and used it as a table. I really didn’t pay it much attention – until I saw it on the news.”

His story is backed up by that of another local woman, named only as Isabelle, who spotted the same object while walking on the beach in May, accompanied by her 10-year-old son.

"It was the beginning of the holidays - around May 10," she told local news website Zinfos974.com.

"I was walking with my son, Krishna. Then from a rock on which we were standing, he saw an object and shouted: 'Mum, that looks like the wing of a plane!'"

Krishna then jumped on what looked like a suitcase. He managed to prise it open, and then spotted another suitcase buried in the black sand.

So you're the reason the media obsessed over it like there had never been a missing airliner before?

Seriously...it's not every day that an airplane full of people just...disappears.
It had happened many times previously without the same kind of media attention.

This phenomenon was some kind of feedback loop. Sensationalism led to dramatically increased ratings for one network (I think CNN started the sensationalism first), then other networks responded with sensationalism. They responded to the increased ratings with even more sensationalism. All the networks saw increased ratings from people who don't normally leave 24-hour cable news running all day. It was absolutely insane.

When has it happened in the modern era with global satellite, navigation, and data networks? Sure it happened in the early days of flight but a modern jetliner disappearing without a trace is going to make a lot of news.

Yes. Multiple times in the last 30 years.

Yes. Multiple times in the last 30 years.
How about more than just asserting "Multiple times in the last 30 years". Concrete examples in the last 30 years of a jetliner full of passengers comparable to a Boeing 777 disappearing without a trace and remaining unknown to this day where and what happened? The only one remotely comparable I can think of is the Air France plane that initially went missing after takeoff from Rio but the crash site was discovered within 5 days along with wreckage and bodies and 2 years later even the black boxes were recovered.

I think his multiple occurrences went missing like this Malaysian airliner did.

It's all part of the same conspiracy. The aliens (or the Russians or the Republicans) are stealing the planes and stealing the evidence that they stole the planes. It's all because they want to lock up the entire supply of the worlds honey-roasted peanuts.

I'm fine with that.

If they go after my dry-roasted peanuts, though...it's COMMANDO time.
