A man was tragically killed outside of the Baltimore Ravens football stadium over the weekend after he attempted to escape a porta potty that had lit up in flames.


The incident happened on Sunday outside of M&T Bank Stadium at approximately 3 p.m., Blair Skinner, a spokeswoman for the Baltimore City Fire Department, told The Baltimore Sun.


After the portable toilets caught fire, the unidentified man was seen running from the blaze — also engulfed in flames himself — by a stadium security guard, Skinner explained to the outlet.

My question is simply how the hell does it catch fire in the first place? It's not that easy to have a scorching flame on a big plastic box without having something else that is flammable.

I have melted shit over a campfire - but... the campfire is the actual flammable device, you're just holding the plastic over it. My question is simply how the hell does it catch fire in the first place? It's not that easy to have a scorching flame on a big plastic box without having something else that is flammable.

Plastic is refined hydrocarbons, and contains about twice as much energy pound for pound as wood does. How easily it ignites is a matter of shape/density, etc. but it does not take much for plastic as thin as a port a potty to light. And as its walls are vertical, it will spread rapidly upward (due to heat rising, vertical flame spread is quick)

If you have ever seen video of somebody shooting dope you can picture this likely scenario. He could have been using a candle or something else that stays lit so he doesn't have to hold the lighter lit the whole time to cook his heroin. Once he was done shooting he nodded off and the candle melts down. Hilarity ensues. No other reason to go where he was at the time he was there unless he was gonna either jerk off or shoot dope. Maybe he spurted a flaming cumshot and caught the drapes on fire who knows.

That's a pretty realistic scenario for that area, except the "hilarity." Dude died, and I'm sure neither he nor the crews that responded probably found it funny. I may in fact know some of them, as I'm friends/teach with several Baltimore City FFs and Medics. But's just not one of the things you don't bring up casually.

I've responded to number of injuries/accidents etc from someone nodding off after using. A candle causing a fire would fit, but likely little evidence of it would survive. Drugs in his system would though, and maybe some metal from the spoon.
