 to people who refuse to donate blood for stupid-ass reasons like "because it's my blood" or "because i'm afraid of needles"

retarded.

 to the guy in the op
What about 'because the thought of inserting a sharp piece of metal in my vein in the hopes of depleting some of my precious blood that keeps me alive, makes me sick to my stomach and I'd probably faint'

Response: Quit overreacting Nancy, and give up the juice.

I'm terrified of needles and faint everytime I give blood. Not a fun experience

I still donate though, as often as I can. Being able to help people is a great feeling

Hopefully when you reach puberty that will go away.

Good job old guy!

In my version of America, he would have a tap installed in his arm so the government could continually take his blood and give it to people who need it.
Guy would be a ward of the state.
Fixed to tell us how you feel it should be done.

You mean I'm gonna have to kill 2,000,000 babies to even things out now?

Ugh.

How is this possible, 984 donations over 56 years is more than 17 donations per year. That's once every 21 days.

Thats what I was thinking. My local blood bank only takes people one every couple of months. They claim any more frequently is unhealthy.

Wow that's nice! I did not figure you could physically donate that often. I donate regularly, but it's like every 3 months I think. They usually call me whent they're in town. I have a rare type, Think it's AH or something like that, I forget now. It's a universal type.

When I started fainting the one time, they stopped taking my blood.

Granted, that was in the afternoon, after a morning of eating almost nothing and drinking only a little water. Can't remember if that was after a morning with PT or not... hmm.
Either way, bad idea to get rid of precious blood when you're basically starved and not optimally hydrated.

I've actually tried to give blood 4 times. Each time there has been some stupid issue. First, couldn't find my veins. Second, I was on antibiotics and didn't know they wouldn't take my blood. Third, I started fainting and the blood was flowing kind of slow to boot. Fourth, they wouldn't tap my arm after discovering the requisite amount of time hadn't passed since they did take some blood from the failed attempt.

Now that I'm in the clear, if there's a drive that isn't less than 24 hours before I have to do intense physical exercise, I'll stop by and give it a try. I think under the right circumstances my body will cooperate.

Yeah, the anti-biotic one has kept me from donating a couple times.

It doesn't matter when I donate (afternoon, morning, well fed, not well fed, always hydrated though) I still faint. It's not from fear of needles either, I just go under. I try to make myself stay conscious as long as possible so I can get the whole pint out.

I usually faint just after they pull the needle out.

There's A, B, AB and O. I guess you're AB which is rare and is a universal recipient. You can receive blood from anyone, but you can only give to other ABs.

Yep it is. In the place I go there's a framed thank-you card on the wall from a kid with cancer that gets me every time I go in. It has a picture of him, 10 yrs old or so, sitting all bald-headed on a hospital bed, huge grin on his face. He hand wrote a card that goes like this:

"Dear platelet donors,

My name is <XXX> and I am 10 years old. For the past 3 years I have been living in the cancer ward of children's hospital. Thank you for all the donations of platelets that keep me alive. I need 3 tranfusions a month of O+ blood, so thank you 'specially to the O+ people."

Whenever I feel a little run down and consider cancelling a donation appointment, I think about that kid and figure I just can't say no to him.

I think this man deserves a prize. Is there a 'humanitarian' Nobel peace prize? If not, they should create it and give this guy the first.
