What does the guy do for a living? Or does he get paid to just donate his blood?

Yeah I may be mistaken on the name, I know it's the one where I can give to anyone.

O- blood can be given to anyone, A person with AB+ can receive any blood type.

I am AB+

I think thats right, but I am doing this from memory.

If logic applied to this situation, then yes, that would work perfectly. However, it's a law passed by government, so it doesn't have to be logical.

That's what I was looking for, if there was a law against it.

I think this man deserves a prize. Is there a 'humanitarian' Nobel peace prize? If not, they should create it and give this guy the first.

Meh, he's already got one, 1mil in life insurance. Though, I wouldn't be opposed to giving him some sort of humanitarian award.

This. from reading the article, they don't need his red blood cells or even platelets, just the plasma with the antibodies. So he's probably not donating whole blood.
Just curious, but what's the demand like for different parts of blood? Is there a shortage of whole blood compared to just platelets? Which one is the best one to give?

There's A, B, AB and O. I guess you're AB which is rare and is a universal recipient. You can receive blood from anyone, but you can only give to other ABs.
This is actually really good to know. If you want to kill someone in the most ridiculous way, inject them with blood they can't handle. If I'm not mistaken, it clots inside of their veins.

I don't know if you can say any one is 'better' than another. Whole blood is more demanding on the donor to give, but the easiest to take - they just drain the blood and off you go.

If you donate platelets or plasma, it takes longer as they have to remove red cells from the blood and put them back. But you can give more often and you don't get so lightheaded or woozy. Your basic blood drive place probably isn't set up for anything but whole blood.

I was donating platelets at one place for a while, when they found out I was CMV negative they were calling me all the frickin time to donate. I went every two weeks for a little while.

edit - what happens if there's the wrong kind of A or B mismatch is antibodies in the recipient bind to the donated red cells and cause them to lyse, releasing the hemoglobin. This is bad.

Rh mismatches (the negative or positive part) can cause a similar reaction, but it's not nearly as fast, so not as deadly.

 to people who refuse to donate blood for stupid-ass reasons like "because it's my blood" or "because i'm afraid of needles"

retarded.

 to the guy in the op

I dont because I don't give a shit. But then again, my blood is not rare (I think).

I wonder if anyone else who ever lived could say they personally saved 2 million people. It's incredible.

I'm O/RH/Neg, so I'd like to look into donating. I have no qualms with needles or any of that.

However, I remember reading somewhere that you have to be drug free for one year? That hardly sounds right to me, and it makes me ineligible. But I think I misunderstood, because you can donate 6 months after getting a tattoo.

I just checked my card now that I'm home, and it's "A RH Negative" that I have. Doing further research, don't think I'm universal like I thought I was. Someone had told me but they must of been mistaken. Still looks like it's a rare type though.

Depends on what you mean by drugs. Heroin - they probably wouldn't take you at all. Snorted coke - 6 months probably. Aspirin - 3 days. Ibuprofen - 1 day.

There's a bunch of other questions about it too... if you've been on blood thinners, accutane... there's a list.

My sister was identified as having the good "baby blood"

Red Cross has her flagged in the system, they will call her before she's eligible to give again, trying to line up appointments, they even ask if she's going out of town and offer to set up an appointment in different cities for her.

Any Rh neg blood is uncommon in general. Types A+ and O+ are pretty common (over 70% in the US), which is why types B and AB are rare in comparison regardless of their Rh factor.

Your A- blood can help people with AB-. You should consider donating since you would help them and other A- people. A quick glance shows that ~6% of Canada has A- and less than 1% have AB-.
