My favorite part is the way the whole "throwing you in the lake of fire" bit isn't a point of contention, but rather it's the wholly arbitrary rigmarole that's apparently required to keep the totally normal and not-inconsistent-with-'loving'-you "throwing you in the lake of fire" bit from happening.

There's no inconsistency if we view religion as a framework of rationalization whereby loving is for your own, and fire lake for the other. The pitch here is that deity can reward our behavior and punish enemies ostensibly not like us, so long as we believe in him harder than the other guy; circular, but not that's ever stopped anyone. It has the useful property of organizing subordinates around the arbiter of how to believe.

Hell is other people's judgement that you find in your own mind.

In this way such admonition to avoid the fire of disbelief may be perfectly accurate.

There is that tendency, which is not altogether terrible, but True believers always find a way to justify themselves.

PhatoseAlpha,

the "hallucinations of the brain" due to oxygen deprivation are the silliest, most un-scientific explanation. I take it you have never pursued this interesting subject yourself.

I recommend you read books by Pim van Lommel "Consciousness Beyond Life", the very good "Dying to be Me" by Anita Morjani and especially the "Journey of Souls" series by Michael Newton and the books by Chris Carter.

Warning, YES there are is a lot of crap in this niche and a lot of "religious" books, let me assure you those are not.

**

To come back to your argument that it's hallucinations, explain to me why people who have NDEs report pretty much the same experiences (with some distinctions, depending on their beliefs)..not some chaotic "hallucinations"?

Explain to me why people who have NDEs report ONLY, and ONLY to meet actual deceased people and why there is not one single NDE report I am aware of where a person "meets" living people or "fantasy people".

Explain to me how it comes that afterlife experiences are consistent and the same, for hundreds of years, across cultures actually.

*

By the way there are people who "scientifically" had been "dead", aka brain activity ceased entirely. There is a "famous" case where a woman had brain surgery, where they needed to "freeze" her brain, no brain activity whatsoever. (I am sure there are more such cases)

I am sorry, the "explanation" that NDEs are "hallucinations" is waaaayyy too simple to me, in fact entirely ridiculous. I urge you to read those books too.

I think it is something like this.
Even if you believe in the after life or not. Sometimes this is just the will to live. Those oscillations in the brain that defines who we are, try desperately to keep going.
That means taking different routes and paths among neurons. These different paths cause vivid dream like experiences. Clinging onto live. That appearing person telling the patient : "it is not your time." That is the patient him or her self fighting to stay alive. It is a fight and struggle to remain existing.

NDE's are consistent and yet inconsistent in nature. They are consistently inconsistent. I postulate that that the person's religious beliefs play a huge part in their NDE experience. Hence, I believe these generate from the brain. A hellfire Christian will experience Hell if he has some cognitive dissonance or is knowing not living up to the standards. Incidentally, many Christians are able to dissociated their morality with the punishment deserved, because Christ took it from them. So they get a free pass to be a terrible human being.

Of course, there are different takes on Christianity - ones that don't support these concepts of heaven/hell or an us vs them mentality. I loosely consider myself Christian, because while I do believe in Jesus Christ and his teachings, I don't believe how the mass of Christianity decided to interpret him in their rigid and hateful way, or worse yet all that AND ignore his teachings and instead subscribe to Paul as the authority. But, I digress...

I think we are all in for a surprise when we die. Not idea what it will be, but I know enough that I can't really be dogmatic about anything on the other side...

Hi,
I have read a lot of interesting insights on this subject, coming from all type of people, and even so I find myself on the softer side of life, where I can't deny that there are a lot of things surrounding us that we can't explain and a lot of questions that need answering. Some have easy answers, that we find easily, but some are a lot harder to understand, and may be called dogmatic. I believe that this is for each person to decide, for everyone to determine what to believe in and see that if they are open and try to step aside for a moment, from all the noise and thoughts that surround us, may find a deeper meaning to life. Just like some people find when they are at the edge of the cliff, falling, and there is nothing there to hold them back, but faith.

Anything you can possibly imagine can possibly be, this is necessarily true.

However, for many of us this isn't up to "belief" as belief is not a convincing way to determine what is true and what is false.

My view stems from observation of reality and I have yet to find any evidence that humans are super special creatures that do not adhere to the laws of physics and do not simply cease to exist just like everything else.

It's also not a problem for me at all. In fact, if I found evidence that would convince me otherwise I'd be greatly disappointed. I'm looking forward to non-existence.

To the mind, the only difference between reality and a vivid dream is that reality is bound by logical causality.

And the mind cannot always determine that in that semi conscious state which makes it seem real.
