I used to work at place that was 6-6 M-Sa and 6-3 on Sunday, so yes, I would say I've worked more than her. I did that for about 6 months straight before I completely burned out.

I would never, ever, EVAR work those kinds of hours again for someone else.

EDIT: of course, at the time, I was around 20 and paid hourly so I was making bank, but I never had any time to spend the money since when I wasn't working I was sleeping.

My wife works those hours...going on 10 years now. The weekends isn't only certain weeks of the year during crunch time...my wife generally works 1 day of the weekend ALL YEAR...EVERY YEAR!

In my youth, I worked a lot of jobs that were 7-12's with some 14-16 hour days thrown in, plus, the jobs were never close to home, so on top of the work hours, I also put in 3-5 hours per day in commute time.

You don't even know son... I married a surgeon . 5 years of residency... They say they have a 80 hour work week? Don't believe it, she worked 100-120 hour work weeks quite a bit. Its like cheating in the NCAA, everyone does it but just a few get caught so its worth it. It's better now as an attending but still crazier than most jobs

I agree 100%. I don't get people who constantly brag about the amount of hours they work.

It isn't a badge of honor when you work tons of hours every week. And I am talking consistently -- we all have projects with deadlines and it might be necessary to put in some long weeks occasionally, but those who brag about working 80 or 100 hours a week ALL the time seem to have huge martyr complexes.

It is also different if you're working for yourself. If you have your own company, then yeah, you probably have to do that. But working for others? That's ridiculous.

Like it's some sort of badge or honor where you can work 80 hours a week or something. To me that's not bragable at all, in fact that seems the exact opposite of what I would want to brag about. Time is one thing that you can never get more of and never get back.

There are exceptions of course (doctors, etc), but if you are working that much every week in corporate America, it means one of two things: 1) you are an extremely inefficient worker or 2) you are letting your company walk all over you. #2 happened to me and I finally wised up after a friend of mine told me the things above. I was mad at first but then it hit me that he was 100% correct.

Yeah, I would agree with your post. Senior year of college, was working 40 hours a week at my hospital then also doing 40 hours a week of clinical rotation at a different hospital plus a full 16 credit hour load of classes. That went on for pretty much the whole 15 week semester. Was amazingly awful. Never do that again!

Nowadays as a RN occasionally I'll work a 12 hour shift the first day, then off 12 hours then a 16 hour shift, then off for 8 and then on for another 12 hours. It SUCKS hardcore for those 3 days but it's big money and I get 3-4 days off after I do it.

Working late is just part of the gig - it's to be expected. Weekends, nights, 1am? Try 3am on Saturday night, try 5:30am to file with the SEC when the market opened.

During year end audits my team worked till 10pm, could not ask to leave earlier. Most of us stayed till 11 or 12am. Friday I let the team go at 7pm. Saturday's were 10am - 7pm and Sunday's were Noon - 6pm. What we had to do to get the job done and file timely.

Looking back - its laughable and I should have quit at the 6yr mark.

Then again - who knows if I'd be in the position I'm in now with the Company I'm at.......

I worked in audit at a Big 4 firm in the Silicon Valley for 3 years, and my wife still works for one after nearly 6 years. To be honest, getting off at 10-11 pm during busy season isn't as bad as it was for me and still is for my wife. During busy season she was lucky if she got home before midnight this year and pulled a 7 day week straight of working past 2 am. She had no weekends and no days off from after New Year's until about mid-March this year.

my gf worked at PwC as an intern in college and they worked her almost 24 hours a day 7 days a week. it's a miserable job. and the initial offers out of college for an auditor is about $45k a year or some crap like that. are you kidding me? with the amount of hours they work it's like making minimum wage. she gave them the finger and got a really nice finance job not in the big 4 offering her 1.5x what pwc did. seems like everyone is willing to work to the bone just for the chance to make partner.

I made it to VP of Finance (I'm 6 years removed from audit) with 1 year of audit experience. I'd say most people stay out of fear. I did make a gamble when I left after only 1 year, but I knew if the gamble didn't pay off I could always come back and slave away for 3 more years.
