It's ok. Smiles and handshakes will bring you to the top. You don't actually have to produce anything valuable..

So true. I found school rather hard and stressfull, and now that I'm an IT tech for two years, went through help desk, some L2 work, and now I'm L3 server, and I have to say the job is MUCH easier then school was. You can also reason more with a boss then you can with a teacher, well depending on the boss anyway, but I have to say I've been lucky and always had a good boss even during summer student jobs.

As a doctor your chemisty related work will be far from the stuff they make you do in school. I doubt you'll be balancing equations and doing stuff like that by hand.

I remember our chemistry class. Our teacher was new, but she was awesome. New experiments usually started similar to this "I never did this before, but it says to mix this with that, who wants to volunteer to.. wait, on the bottle there's a warning about not mixing it with that...". I immediately lift my hand to be the volunteer. she called me phsyco, I used to try stuff and I was not scared to put more then I should. The van degraff generator was fun too (she was also our physics teacher). Man, while I don't miss school I do miss the fun things we did in that class. I was also the only one brave enough to dunk my two hands in (diluted) sulfuric acid with an electrical wire to setup the electrolysys experiment. Was a wire that went inside a test tube (one tube for both wires) and it had to be dunked in a way that there is no air in the tube so it had to be done fast. Good times. So many explosions.

maybe, no, and probably not since i wanna stay close to home.

id much rather be an MD only because my dad was. it'd make him happy. my sister is an MD. of course, none of the above will probably happen anyway so i dont have to worry.

great! i always envisioned myself having a pretty good future but not really anymore. i always had lots of opportunities and come from a pretty fortunate background, but im pretty sure im fucked now. wish i could go back and do things different, but i suppose there is no point looking backwards, you cant change the past. relevant quote time:

anyone ever been in a situation like this? im pretty disappointed in myself, and really annoyed that these two classes are keeping me from doing what i want to do, when i wont be using these skills in my future career (at least according to doctors that ive asked, including my sister). i kinda hate myself for what i have (or havent) done. to top it all off, how the fuck will i ever find a wife if i cant make any money?

soooooo...any rich people here need manual labor? im pretty strong.

Well you dont need to know too much of chemistry and physics but being able to learn information, synthesize it and apply that knowledge is important. If you're getting 0.0 or 1.0 in a class... that's not a good sign for any graduate program that requires learning

well beggars can't be choosers. If you want to do healthcare and your grades/MCAT really blow, these are your options

Do what I did... Leave your school, and go to a different, better one. Either A) you'll find teachers who are a lot better at explaining shit than the ones from your other school (even if your current school is known for having good teachers in those subjects) or B) the curriculum and/or teachers will be a lot easier and you will pass. This worked for me, with a Biology major in a pre-med direction, and considering how much I suck at math and science, I bet you could pull it off. Keep going to easier schools if necessary (hell, go to a community college if they'll let you transfer the credits) and just get the shit out of the way. Once that shit is done, get to learning the human anatomy, biology, etc. that will actually matter in your day-to-day as a doctor.

Don't just give up cause you suck, keep trying easier shit. It's the American way, that almost can't let you fail if you find somewhere easy enough, and it's better than throwing away what you want and doing some bullshit job just because one school sucked too hard for you to pass. Trust me, TRY ANOTHER SCHOOL.

what chemistry is this? p-chem and organic chem are absolutely essential, of course, but the quantitative is a mere stepping stone. it's a pain, but all it takes is redundancy. You just have to keep doing it over and over, and you'll eventually get it. very mathematical.

Once you get to Biochem, though, then you'll know if you really can keep going. That's far more relevant in the medical field (basically rote memorization of structure, conceptual chemistry: ionization, etc.)

Anyway, microbiology is far more essential in medicine than general chem. Of course, you have to get through it to get to the next level.

Be like that old dude in House that practiced medicine in some South American country. If you can't hack it in the US, hack it (pun intended) elsewhere

I had a similar problem when I started college. First semester I managed to barely get above a 3.0, next one it slipped to around 2.7, and the one after that it dropped WAY down when I failed two classes and got a D in a third.

I went in as a food science major, but the math and science classes completely killed me. I was despairing for a while until I discussed it with my mom for a bit, and she suggested looking back to high school and find out what I got the best grades in. I recalled that while I enjoyed my science classes more, I actually got the best grades in English class. Ended up deciding on a new major, technical writing, that combined my love of science with my skills at writing. It worked out very well.

OP, you may have to change your vision somewhat, but you can still do something at least related to what you want. Try to pull yourself back up, but if you're definitely getting nowhere, then maybe it's time to switch majors. It's okay; there's something out there you'll do really well at.
