How did he manage that?

Man Turns Hand into Brake Lever

Disclaimer: This one might make you vomit/puke/barf/hurl/upchuck/lose your lunch.

Holy fuck was my initial response to seeing these photos of a mountain biking injury that involved a brake lever going through this dude’s hand and then resurfacing.

“When Kevin Myatt dropped his chain powering into Dragons Tail in Whakarewarewa a few days ago he couldn’t in his wildest dreams have imagined how the slam would unfold. After sliding along the ground he realised the bike was still with him and glancing down at his wrist he soon realised why. His brake lever had slid up his arm (slicing it open on the way) and then pierced the skin on his wrist surfacing a few centimetres later, as Kevin puts it, he was now ‘at one with his bike.’ ”

Just to clarify, the answer is yes. What you are seeing in this photo is the brake lever going through his palm and back out by his thumb. W…T…F!!! That is SO gnarly.

“His riding buddies Julia and Tim called the ambulance and quickly removed the brake lever and caliper from the bike whilst Kevin Stemmed the blood flow from his own wrist. Now I’m pretty sure that you like me have never seen this type of wound before, as it happens neither had any of Rotorua’s health professionals, starting with the ambo guys; when one realised there wasn’t enough light to shoot a good photo he instructed his partner to use the flashlight to illuminate it better. Kevin didn’t fare much better at Rotorua hospital either where at least 10 hospital staff heard about the brake lever and turned up with personal cameras and cell phones.”

“Even the radiologist who had been on strike admitted on seeing the wound that she was glad she came in to work!!! A general anesthetic and 15 stitches later, Kevin was good to go. As soon as the stitches are out he’ll be back in the forest and is not deterred one ounce by his freakish (yet slightly entertaining) wound.”

We wish you a speedy recovery, Kevin. Definitely one of the most badass mountain biking injuries I’ve ever seen.

I did not need that.

So, can I flip you off a few times and then sue for $4k per incident?

Lucky for him, that's one of the meatier parts of the human body.....but still, ouch!!

Hopefully he has no permanent damage, save the wicked scar to show off.

Would have been better if he had to ride further down the trail for rescue using his hand to actually brake.

lol, when i saw the pictures, i was like "wait... the guy surgically put a brake lever into his had? why?"... then, i saw his dirty, bloody hand and my stupid ass thought, "wow, that dumbass is going to get an infection... look at all that dirt. he performed surgery on himself to put a bike brake lever into his hand and didn't even do it in a sterile environment... what a total idiot".

i'm a moron.

That's a very blunt object to be pushed through skin. Normally you see chucks of flesh taken out by handle bars or bar ends.

He shouldn't have been speeding down that hill. He should have remembered that age old biking dictum, "Better late than lever."

After seeing a motorcyclist have his appendages ripped from his body because he was going too fast, this has little shock.

Still, pretty nasty.
