Other than that he's usually not being so ridiculous, except when he's leaping and bounding down and mountain or through a jungle.

You missed the 10 episodes where he jumped into a river rather than walking and a life vest appeared under his coat.

If you look at the credits on MvW Baer is the PRESENTER of survival information, there is usually a different survival expert listed for each show. Les seems to know his shit regardless of where he is. I think Survivorman is more realistic while MvW is more sensational. I do like both shows however. Les has a dry sens of humor which I appreciate. Baer usually ends up climbing down some sheer rock face that most normal people would not want to do even in a survival situation.

I like both shows.

If I'm stuck somewhere in the middle of winter, I want to know that getting wet or sweaty often means getting dead. Plus Survivorman is great for showing what kind of plants are edible for when meat isn't available, good thing for him since he's a crappy hunter/fisherman (see Alaska episode).

Les Stroud just strikes me as a guy more able to keep himself alive somewhere.

Jumped into a muddy bog in Scotland. Jumped into quicksand somewhere. Jumped off a 10 foot cliff. etc, etc, etc.

Sure he fakes some shit, whatever. Alot of the shit though you can't fake.

they put a big disclaimer at the beginning of the show

and for the Scotland show, he setup some rabbit snares. then they cut to, "well, you won't always catch a rabbit, so i just happened to have brought one along, so we can show you how to kill it and eat it"

that was lame

I like both shows...

I've noticed:

MvW : The guy seems to be on the move... trying to get out of the situation.

S M : Tends to stay put and "survive" in the place he's at.

Watching tv for actual learning is overrated. Entertainment FTW.

Are you dense? It's not as much as a "controversy" as you think it was. Hey guess what? Ashlee Simpson lipsyncs. Oh wait, she's still making music.

In the Alaska episode he was (unsuccesfully) fishing from his kayak and said something like "Sorry, the multitudes of salmon leaping out of the water on either side of me keep interrupting".

You must be in the same camp that says that steroids in baseball is okay, because everyone does it, or it's entertainment, or whatever.

I don't get why Bear's nickname is "Bear" (or is it his birth name?). He doesn't resemble a bear in any way. His facial features are more like a weasel or something, and he's always clean shaven. He's not big and muscular either. It seems really contrived.

Haha, I love Les when he's trying to hunt or fish for food. The man's got like a 95% failure rate, and when he does catch something it's like some small thing like a lizard or scorpion. Except that time when he caught the booby and was eating booby breast.

my nickname is Moose. I do not look at all like a Moose. what's your point?

everyone's on the MvW withchunt. It's a fad to hate the show, just as it was a fad to hate McDonalds after Morgan Spurlock came along.

Anyone with half a brain knew that the situations were contrived. The whole point of the show is to demonstrate how you can survive and react to certain situations. Survivorman takes the tack of trying to wait long enough to be rescued after 7 days. In reality, you have no idea when or if a rescue might occur, so in many cases, you need to be proactive. THAT is how MvW is geared.

I like Survivorman better because the man is there alone for 7 days, and even though they take measures to protect him, there were several occasions I have seen where he could have died, like when he got separated from his tail when he was adrift on the ocean.

Or when he had to abandon camp in the Amazon because he was being stalked by a jaguar. That was pretty cool.

I do like his dry humor too.

Didn't Les have to tap out during one of his desert survival episodes? Eventually it was just too hard to get water and he had to call for extraction.

I disagree, he packs all his own equipment and even carries the camera gear .He often has to walk out, place the camera, then walk back by the camera to get the shot (then retrieve the camera). He is on his own. I can't figure out how he eats so little and still has energy to hike around, hunt, etc. He is one tough SOB.

My favorite is when he eats some tiny morsel of food after 96 hours of nothing, thoughtfully chews away, and then announces he is full. he did catch a rabbit in a snare once.

Ya know, I remember watching, at work, a documentary of this guy who moved up in to the absolute boonies of Alaska and just lived off the land, hutned, built a log cabin and all that stuff. I think he shot all the film himself, and lived there for like 20+ years. For the life of me, though, I cannot remember his name or the name of the documentary.

Anyone familiar with this?
