If I found it I'd really have to think hard about what I would do, devil and an angel would be on my shoulders for a long time before I could make up my mind.

I'm guessing I would hold onto the money and then check back at the convenience store every couple days to see if anybody reported losing that money there. If there were no reports of somebody losing that amount of money I would keep it, I'd assume whoever lost it didn't report it since it was probably drug/dirty money.

Now if I found a duffel bag with several hundred thousand+ dollars in it, I would 100% keep it and not say a word to anybody. Anybody carrying that much on them in cash is dirty. Just make sure to ditch the bag you found it in and look through all the money to make sure there is no tracking device, you wouldn't want to end up like the guy from "No Country for Old Men."

Basically, the smaller the amount of money the more likely an honest person lost it and the greater the chance I would return it.

I would have kept it. I honestly don't care what he needed it for and I know it. Hell it was on a trash can. If you are dumb enough to leave $13k there well you are dumb and its your fault anyway

Anyone that carries $13K in a paper bag and then loses said paper bag does not deserve to have $13K. It's not a question of the ethics on the part of the finder, it's a simple matter of the universe enforcing the "a fool and his money..." rule. Keep it, the idiot is just going to lose it again and the next finder won't give it back. He loses out either way, so you might as well be the one that keeps it.

Heck, some can't even bother reading the thread. I'll point it out again - in addition to it being a very simply ethical/moral decision for most of us, keeping it IS ILLEGAL, AND IT WAS LOCATED IN AN AREA WHERE THERE ARE SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS. Take it home, keep it, there's an investigation, they track you down, you get arrested. That amount = felony.

I'd definitely take the bag and take a lot of pictures of the bag, contents, etc and verify/document how much money is in the bag.

Bag with no ID - find a hiding place [first thought is a bus or train station personal locker] and wait awhile to see what happens. I'd paranoidly check the local news, police reports, and other sources to see if someone reports the lost bag. I'd eventually stagger purchasing money orders from various places that sell them [post office, etc] and use the money to pay down debts.

Bag with ID - obviously find out how to contact the person via an anonymous method [pay phone, newly created email, etc] and setup a meeting at the local police station for my protection [just in case it was drug money].
