ON A 143214543 BILLION DOLLAR BUDGET, plus the experience of having launched it before like 50 times? WTF is wrong here? Are people really that incompetent?

This is ridiculous.

Give me a 100 billion dollar budget and a pool of 100 experienced, well-trained genius scientists and yes, I believe I could.

are you an engineer?

One of the most difficult thing nowadays, for engineers, is the public's lack of appreciation for what has been done. The majority of society do not know the hard work put into it, and they just listen to what the media says:

media: NASA screwed up, and they spent 100 billion dollars
society: OMG they suck.

Yeah, we should build super crazy submarines instead. Then we could explore the ocean depths, where we know for sure there is actual evidence of CRAZY life forms.
Instead, we go to space, searching for any evidence of life at all...

We need better Antarctic exploration gear, too. Then we would have a fighting chance against the penguins when they finally mobilize and come for our asses.

They have a 16.5 Billion dollar budget including all current projects and work on the shuttle replacement

I agree we should expect better but I think foam/stuff is bound to fall off going almost 14,000 mph.

Youre all forgetting one thing. As smart as these scientists are, theyre still only human. For example, my boss has a doctorate(sp?) from MIT in metalology, and I catch errors of his once in a while (stressing the "while").

Anyway, just wanted that if somethings made by a human, there's going to be something wrong with it.

Just more proof of the further pussification of this country. In the beginning NASA was strapping guys to overgrown bottle rockets and everyone knew there was a risk. Now we have the most complicated machine in the world to send people into space on and everyone thinks a trip into space on it should be like jumping in their SUV and going to the store for milk.

There are risks people. Get used to it. Going into space will never be 100% foolproof or safe.

remeber these space shuttles are almost 25 years old now...
due to budget cutbacks a new one was never developed..

me.. i wouldnt fly a 25 year old aircraft into space...

challeneger blew up when I was in 8th grade... and they had been flying a number of years before that..

NASA is way behind they are sitting on thier asses trying to deal with having no budget.

Who said space travel is about searching for life? People need to realize the Earth simply cannot sustain the human race at the rate we're growing at. Unless we start implementing population controls or devise new methods of agriculture, we will out grow the planet. Of course thats a long long ways down the road, but why not begin now. And as been said before, no one seems to realize the technological advances that space research has brought us. Much of the new technology in the 60's, 70's, and 80's was created at or for NASA, and/or by the russian space program.

A real waste of money is the Nation building war the U.S. is engaged in.. over 1 billion dollars per-day, and thousands of soldiers lives wasted on a nation with no real international interest other then oil. If you look at a 25-50 year picture of the earth, was has or will spending a trillion dollars on Iraq have done for the U.S. or the rest of the planet for that matter? "omg it saved us from WMD, dumbass"

Where as space exploration will get us new technologies, new places to visit/explore, new resources to exploit, and so on.

Not to mention it takes a WHOLE LOT more then 100 'experienced, well-trained genius scientists' just to pull off a successful mission.. That doesnt even come close to counting those designing/maintaining the shuttle, the rocket boosters, and all the equipment loaded in the cargo bay.

its 25 years old. and still its the only one in the world. its still no cake walk this space. and don't pretend that commercial space thing with the private rocket is anything near what a space shuttle has to do. that thing barely touched space at 60miles or so. space station is at 230miles

i dont think you understand how difficult the job they have to do
-lift a 4.5 million pound machine off the ground
-accellerate it to 17,000 mph to enter orbit
-slow from 17,000 mph to a few hundred mph in the course of a few minutes
-it has to carry people so you cant have any f-ups and you cant really test it, so every system on board has to have multiple redundancies and be tested/proven waaayy beyond mission expectations.

summary: it's a real b1tch
