Per subject, I'm near my free gmail space limit on emails and need to delete a bunch of old stuff. I just want to make sure that my Outlook keeps ALL emails that have been dumped automatically to Outlook.

So, if I go online and delete a bunch of old gmails, will that have any effect on those emails that have already been forwarded automatically to Outlook?

You are correct. It's IMAP. So, if I understand you right anything I do on GMail will affect Outlook and vice-versa? I can see managing the emails from Outlook (there are many I could delete) and letting gmail "sync". I'm spooked about creating new PSTs. Last time I did that about 5 years ago it took about 2 mos to download everything correctly into new .pst files and I ended up dumping things I didn't want to. Operator error I suppose.

Main question is: Can I delete emails from the outlook side and be able to see the results on the gmail side within a day or so?

I would expect the result to be pretty much immediate.

If it's not immediate, maybe look into this:

Yes, IMAP mirrors the 2 sides, so Outlook and GMAIL should be the same. So any folder you create in Outlook or any email you move or delete should reflect rather quickly in GMAIL and vice versa. IMAP doesn't create a PST file automatically so my guess is when you did this previously you set up a POP account in Outlook. POP accounts use PST files to store all of the email, contacts, etc in Outlook. POP accounts download the emails from the GMAIL servers. There are settings to also leave files on the GMAIL server when you set up the account, but traditionally this is not set by default with POP accounts. In your current case the PST file you create will not be "attached" to any account so it won't download any emails. You have to manually move them there from the Inbox or any other stored folder you have set up on the IMAP account.

Gmail and POP doesn't work the way most people expect it to, for example the 'delete from server' setting, you need to change settings at gmail's end for gmail to honour it.

Side note - be aware of the 'autoarchive' feature in Outlook (found in the Options UI in the 'File' menu), sometimes users end up getting stuff archived from IMAP to local storage unexpectedly because they don't fully understand what the feature does.

Personally I would disable AA unless it does exactly what you want it to do.
