Manchester United fans - Malcom Glazer now owns majority stake in club

Glazer gets majority stake in Manchester United

well, the speculation and takeover attempts have been going on for months. Now he's bought out the majority share of the club and is on his way to complete control. Shareholders are dropping like flies.

I have mixed feelings about this. The club has had a poor year by MU standards, so maybe a shakeup is needed. But fans in Manchester see this as the end of the club as they know it.

any other manchester united fans have any thoughts?

I'm a Bucs fan. Hopefully, now that he's bought the team, he can get back to helping Tampa get a Super Bowl.

The fans burned an effigy of him outside the ground this afternoon. I'd guess he won't be making many personal appearances for a while. His family has received death threats as well. Us Brits take our footy pretty seriously!

i think the main reason is that with his proposed buyout, he'd have to take loans from banks to cover the $800 million proposal, which would in turn put the club in debt for $300 million. he's borrowing and betting that Manchester United will be profitable enough to cover that in a few years time.

plus he's an American businessman and they don't want an American to own the biggest and richest English football club in the world.

leveraged buyout will probably put a lot more debt on MUFC than $300 million leading to higher ticket prices as well as tightened purse strings when buying future players.


BTW MUFC is probably the highest valued sports team in the world at around $1 Billion.

man, non-English clubs have pathetic profit margins compare to English ones. English ones have roughly 15-25 percent (profit/revenue) while some non-english ones have losses money despite millions in income.

I'm not a United fan (Spurs are my team) but am interested to see exactly what happens with United. The amount of debt they will incur would worry me but obviously Glazer is looking to make the team more successful to bring in more revenue etc. A lot of the comments in the UK appear to indicate that he will now have to sell Tampa Bay - is that right? Has he been good for Tampa Bay? I know they won the Superbowl but was that purely down to his influence?

Woodgate would be a good signing if he ever got fit! Owen has done well I think (much better than I expected). Makelele was a big loss though but Morientes hasn't done a great deal for Liverpool yet.

He was good for Tampa in that he
1) spent money on the team (Hugh Culverhouse was a tightwad)
2) let his GM do his job (i.e. build the team to be good for the long term)
3) let the coach do his job (Dungy started off 0-5, but eventually got the team going)
4) got the Super Bowl (both winning and hosting)

He was bad for Tampa in that
1) he threatened to move the team unless a new stadium was built
2) fired the coach that turned around our team in a very undeserved fashion
3) mortgaged our future by getting a new coach (2 losing seasons after a SB).
4) made the GM who turned around our team leave
5) seemed to care more about buying another team (LA Dodgers and Man U, I believe) recently than helping Tampa
