Mandatory drug tests for work.

Construction requires it. Got tested when I was hired and get you can get lucky enough to be randomly selected. If we have an accident on site, both parties have to get tested ASAP.

I've been drug tested at every job I've ever applied to in the last 15 years (in the U.S.)

At my current job I also had a hair follicle test performed as well as a client requirement to go onto their site.

Anything having to do with the gubmint, or relating to public services almost always have mandatory and random drug tests. Otherwise its the decision of the company whether or not to DT. It used to be that just about everybody did it, nowadays its hit and miss. I had a factory job that did, and then I had an IT admin job that didn't.

You're right, it's about companies being free to hire and employ whoever they want.

It's easy enough to circumvent for those motivated enough, so the drug testing really doesn't do that, does it.

and what I do in my own time is none of their business as long as it doesn't effect my work. Plus people go into work hung over and most co worker will just laugh at them.

You're missing the point, I'm not disagreeing with anything you are saying. I don't think anyone should be able to tell anyone what they can do on their free time. (within reason of course)

However, companies have a right to pick and choose who they hire based on the guidelines that they pick. If that means they wish to drug test, they can. If you wish to work for said company, you need to play the game.

I was tested when I working in a Sears warehouse at 16 and when I had a summer job at GE. In my professional career I have never been tested. I actually think most of the people in my office smoke pot. My wife works at a large hospital and I don't think they have drug screens either.

My son just got hired in a rather dangerous line of work. I think in the past month, he & all the other new hires have been drug tested 3 times. One of the guys in their group bragged about how he beat the test by using someone else's urine. Several of the guys alerted the employer & now that guy is gone.

Well you know the US and their up tight attitude towards drugs, "Oh won't someone think of the CHILDREN!!!". US drug laws are just insane. But I suspect that this law has been embraced by companies because it probably gives them one more way to easily fire employees they don't like if they happen to use drugs.

Or to prevent them from being sued when an intoxicated employee causes an accident.

Workman's comp insurance will do anything to keep from paying out. Therefore, they require businesses to test before they cover the company. Restaurants are exempt of course... they'd have no employees if they did.

Linesman, working around high voltage. VERY good paying job. The guy who couldn't give up weed for his job is now out what would have been paying him a 6 figure salary within 3 or 4 years, excellent pension, health benefits, etc.

I worked at a hotel doing patron service stuff and had to be tested. They only test at the time of hiring though so you can do drugs after the initial one.

Mining. You go underground, you pass a drug test monthly and a breathalizer at the door every morning before you make it to the change house. Not taking a chance with anyone's life with 2000 feet of earth and rock above you.

I had been drug free for almost a year at that point. It felt good to pass the piss test.
They never called me to give me a job though...
