I'm a bit new to Linux, so I went with Mandrake 9. I use PPPoE in Windows, and I have a router so it connects me automatically. During the Mandrake installation it asked me for my network settings, and after that it asked me if I wanted to connect on boot, I selected no because I thought it was causing problems from a previous installation. So my question is, how do I connect now? And how would I set it to connect automatically on boot?

Using KDE 3.

If you have a router that is connected to your DSL modem and your puter is connected to the router, you need to just setup DHCP or a static IP/gateway/DNS in MDK and you should be good to go. Look for a network settings wizard type tool in MDK and that should get you setup. Just set the NIC up like you had it in Windows, be it with DHCP or static addresses and you're good.

That should put you in the direction, but I don't use MDK so I can't be extremely specific without trying to explain how to configure the NIC in the console, which I don't even do myself as Red Hat has a nice little tool

Good luck!

try this:

1. login as root
2. give the command "ifup eth0"
i'm assuming the network card in your computer is called eth0, which is default. if you want to check that info out, give the command "ifconfig" while logged in as root, and it should give you all you need to know.

this should bring up your internet. in terms of trying get the computer to connect on boot, i never do that because if my computer isn't connected to any internet source (i have a laptop), it takes a good 2 minutes during boot for linux to figure that out (it seems like an eternity when waiting for the test to fail). but if you want to setup the dhcp to be configured on boot, goto the mandrake control center, then choose internet settings or boot (or something like that), then there should be a whole list of things that get started at boot time, and you can change the option for dhcp to be started on boot.

hope that helps.
