Mandrake - "Mounting local filesystem" locks

I'm new to linux, so at the moment, I don't have a clue where to fix my probs....

Dual booting Mandrake 7.1 Deluxe (someone gave it me, I know, d/l for free and 8.x is out, but I'm on a dialup and a budget-go figure) and Win98se. Win98 is fine.
When Mandrake starts to boot, it checks several things and I get an [OK], but when it starts "Mounting local filesystem", I lock up.
Automatic install seemed to go fine, supposedly setup gnome and kde ok. It created two partitions "hdb5" and "hdb7" and both check out ok on a scan after I hit reset. Tried the failsafe boot, same prob.
Any helpful hints?

Here's the system:
Amd XP1600+ on Asus A7V333
256mb Crucial DDR2100
Gainward Geforce3 64mb
Maxtor 40GB ATA133 7200rpm
WD 20GB ATA66 7200rpm
Sony 8x4x32 cdrw
Pioneer 16x dvd
External Creative 56k modem

Upgrade to a newer version. There was someone in FS offering cheap cds a little while back, and cheapbytes.com(?) has cds for less than $5 I think.

Thanks n0cmonkey. I did some more digging around and tried a manual install also. My problem seems to stem from the vid card - no X support under Mand 7.1 for a GF3 and I couldn't locate just a plain jane vga driver with the install that would work.
My guess is that later versions will support the card and solve some of my probs, like you suggested.

Thanks!

If you get a retail boxed set I believe there is no extra driver installation necessary. If you download it, you will have to install the nVidia Linux drivers. Fortunately, its pretty easy and a FAQ exists in the Linux FAQ thread.

Linux is still coming into it's own, it runs great on older equipment, I like Suse with my G3ti500. You might want to get a copy of Suse for Home or get someone to send you the latest Mandrake beta. Nvidia has great support for g-cards. Plus KDE 3.0 works very well for me and I'm still learning.

Thanks guys. My Mandrake 7.1 was a retail box, but I just couldn't find any supported video modes. The latest card they supported was a GF1. It was dated May 2000, so a GF2 wasn't even out yet. I tried about all of the modes that made any sense, but no luck.
I may just pick up a later version of Mandrake or maybe try the latest RH. I heard RH is cutting some prices, do you guys know if a new version is almost upon us?

My nephew is running Suse and KDE3, so I may just borrow it from him. KDE looks sweet . Much more impressive looking than Windoze (and hopefully a hell of a lot more stable too).

Quick question on partitions: Do you need a root and boot partition or just a root?

RH 8 is in beta right now I believe. You will need a / and a swap, nothing else is *necessary*. A /boot wouldnt need to be big, 30-100MB really.
