mandrake or redhat + winxp LILO

Do any of the following sertups work with windows XP? I currently have XP on one hard drive and would like to put mandrake or red hat on the other hard drive with LILO boot loader. Which verion and what distribution works so that the boot loader works? I would like to but i have tried mandrake 8.1 and it mesed up the first time i tried to install and i'm also having problems with redhat 7.2 . I running on the kt266a epox board. thanks

I have slackware running on the same hdd as XP. Lilo managed to install itself correctly somehow, i'm not sure. I tried copying the bootsector from linux and putting it on the main hdd. You could try the same. in linux use the comand:

dd if=/dev/hdX of=/etc/bootsect.lnx bs=1 count=512

that file should be output into the /etc dir. X btw is the hdd linux is on. Copy that file from your linux hdd and place it in the c:\ directory on you windows hdd. Then in the boot ini in XP (right click on computer then properties then advanced tab then startup and recovery) at the top you can choose to edit the boot.ini. Add this line at the bottom of the file :

C:\bootsect.lnx="Slackware 8.0"

Save the file and you should get an option to chose Microsoft WindowsXP or Slackware 8.0 at startup. If you need, these directions are here:

Either should work fine. You may have to edit LILO though. Not a big deal, there are plenty of docs on it. If you want to use the Windows bootloader there is a neat little FAQ (link at the top of each forum).

Linux Documentation Project should have something if you want to use lilo.
